Science relies on observable fact. Something HAS to be observable in order for holistic science is being used to come to a logical deduction.
Science doesn't just start "Making shit up" and threaten people with eternal damnation if they don't buy it. Look up the scientific method and see how it's done.

Ummm...How do you think religion was shared, other than through language? Communication and sharing knowledge, such as the knowledge of how to hunt, find or build shelter, etc, have always been necessary (even animals have need for this). Religion is old, but not that old :P. As for community: We're family/group oriented animals, community, however basic, is in our blood.

Try thinking of God as a super consciousness that undrlies all. The same way energy is more fundemental than matter (even though that seems counter intuitive), we will find one day that consciousness is more fundamental than energy. Consciousness -> Energy -> Matter.

Ignorance is a prevalent state for humanity, no one knows everything (or even much of anything in the grand scope of knowledge/ experience). Science has become a new form of religion in it's own right, it just has more solid, slap-you-in-the-face facts, as that's all that science is interested in ;) . Religion is a term that's become a veritable red flag to the bull in all those who reject spirituality, allowing many truths and abilities (such as meditation or prayer) to be belittled or cast off. Why do we believe that the Universe had to be created? Why can't it just exist? Try this as a thought experiment. Imagine the existence of absolutely nothing, not even space itself. Is it even possible? I don't believe so. It seems to me that something has to exist, and that something is the Universe.

does exist....but what you're referring to is whether the universe has always existed and we know that this not the case. The universe is expanding and continues to do so; and if it is expanding, then we know that at some point, it was much closer together, ie a point of origin.
It's the question of "why" that is central to the debate.
But Id rather swallow the scientific idea than believe theres some all knowing, all seeing being out there who created all life, because if he did it, its probably for his own amusment.
