  Each bulb contains about a drop of mercury. A very toxic heavy metal. The new bulbs are just as fragile as the old. Imagine the number of broken bulbs in households and landfills when these new bulbs become mandatory.
  The increase in mercury contamination in households, waterways and wildlife is going to increase greatly.

- yes but...
  in an effort to be more "green" i changed all the spot lights in my bath to LEDs.
  The problem is although i find them very usefull and economical they aren't suitable for places with moisture and steam (the electronic circuit burns quickly).

  I pick them up at the local grocery store, almost always on sale at $2 for 4 18 watt bulbs equivalent to a 75 watt in brightness. thats .50 cents each.
  
  But remember each of these bulbs contain mercury. so Be careful with them and dispose of properly, If you throw them in the trash the mercury ends up in our food and water supply.

You forgot to mention about the temperature of the bulbs and the heat they emit but we all know this!

  Look where I live we get our power from clean water generated energy. The dam.
  Now how is it bad for me to put up a few strings of lights using less energy than a single ligh bulb. Yet filling every home with toxic mercury filled bulbs is so green?

  Getting power from a Dam isn't so eco friendly as you may think. you ll have to do some research first about the chain reactions to the environment when a dam is being constructed.
  You can do whatever you want to your property dude, but don't criticize people who want to think about their kids future first.
  As long as my computer... it is hooked up in a bike power generator, sorry got to go, i have to do some pedal for the next two hours (my comp need power). cheers
