How to get green traffic lights using science! Save Gas, Time & Frustration! Works great! See the Test Results! More»
My dad works for the DOT and say this wont help at all. A motorcycle alone has enough to trigger the light. Plus in your video the light went from red to green really fast which tells me you just waited to approach the light until it turned yellow. Good video though
By kudo148 1190250642 Reply Spam [+23] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI don't know anyone that works for the DOT so I'm not an expert. I just a plain old guy with a motorcycle that gets stuck at the light for a few minutes till a bigger car pulls up and the light turns green. I don't know if this magnet thing works but I do know the problem is real and I would try strapping a live chicken to my rear tire if that could help.
By Wash0ut 1190391381 Reply Spam [+33] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIn my city in Canada. It's legal for motorbikes to "run" those lights....since we'd be waiting until another car comes for them to turn green. I like it that way. So at night when there's little traffic I just treat them like 4 way stop signs. Cops can't bust me for running a red that never turns green.
By Mordeth13 1200321245 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDude you are very lucky!
By jasleil 1209186694 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou mean in other countries if you went to a red light at 4am. You'd have to sit there for hours waiting for a car to come? I doubt it.

| used to work for a company that installed intersections, lights, poles, guardrail, etc, etc, and that is exactly how they work.
In the grooves cut into the pavement shown in the video lie only 2 'wraps' of wire. More wraps means more 'sensitivity' which is why some turn lanes will have more wraps and other lanes will have less, to help the computer determine which lanes need to go first/longest. The amount of ferrous conductive metal present in any vehicle directly affects the speed with which this system responds to traffic demands.
Great Idea Kip!!
voicing my own opinion is all
Now that would be funny looking. It would all be worth it!
By Kipkay 1190403151 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei ride... all lights dont' work.
By 4theriders 1190586097 Reply Spam [+6] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewhat happens when they do road repairs and cover up the coil? Now it's 2 inches deeper than it was and the sensitivity is cut in half?
By Kipkay 1190251546 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMagnetic forces go throgh anything. It would not be affected by the road surface, except that cars are now a couple of inches futher away. A good example of the unstopable force of magnets is the earths magnetic field, it comes from the center of the earth and isnt affected by the materials in the ground.
By OSIC 1190277146 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMagnetic forces decrease proportional to the square distance.
By FreshMind 1190396674 Reply Spam [+14] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removea few inches here! Attatched to a scooter or motorcycle in the right spot would put it about 5 or 6 inches from the ground.
By Kipkay 1190545305 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveA magnet as large as the earth would certainly disregard a few inches of dirt or asphalt, however stating that any magnet will go through anything is ridiculous.
By criverstamu09 1190298433 Reply Spam [+9] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou must have never taken class because he is right, magnetic fields are not stopped by anything. It is impossible to "stop" a magnetic field, but one can redirect or nullify its effects with another field. In fact asphalt or anything which has electrons will most likely strengthen a magnetic field. Of course the real problem here is that the wires are now under ground a few inches so they will have a harder time detecting the vehicle because it is farther away...
By icopy11 1190321069 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewhy can the magnet on my frigde hold one sheet of paper but not ten?
By kelley42 1190489714 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is because its not a very poerful magnet. When it is 1 paper thickness away from the fridge, it is still has enough pulling power to hold the paper on the fridge. But add 5 more paper thicknesses, and the magnet is now 5x as far from the fridge, thereby decreasing its pulling power. This coupled with the added weights of the paper cause them to fall down.
By philritter21 1190846110 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe magnet isnt pwoerfull enougth. if they were all the same. you could make your very own bumber-car ring made out of refrigerator magnets and then post it on metacafe and make money. :)
Please give me thumbs up for this comment. I think its good. :) lol
o really then that kind of eliminates the whole thing about distance from the bike not mattering. You just completely negated the earlier statement. HMMM...
By god.favored 1206251992 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebesides that it probobly isn't a strong magnet, it can't really magnetize five sheets of paper, but your point is also null because refrigerator magnets use friction to keep the paper up, a better way to test it would be to set up a gauge to measure small units of force and put the magnet close to the metal object(not touching), and then put a thin object (like a piece of paper, or multiple pieces) in between the magnet and the metal and see if the force of the magnet is differed.

By RhyeKno 1191435083 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCompas do not always point north,
they point to the most powerful magnet.
Put a magnet or even some iron in around a compass and it will point to it, not north.
futher distance means less strength, small metal mass means less magnetic strength or inductance, Motorcycle shops have been selling magnets for this purpose for many years, Do an ebay search I remember seeing them on there also
I know you have a brain, use it
Wow, you not only do not understand the electromagnetic force, but you also site a great reference against your argument. The Earth actually bocks out 98% of the magnetic field generated by the core. Any number of materials block, to a great or lesser extent, magnetism. I don't know what a few inches of concrete or asphalt would do to the magnetic force of the coils, but to state that it does nothing is just plain stupid. Time for you to take Physics again.

the magnetic is to trigger the sensor. but the bike not being heavy enougth is would could be the problem with the pavement :)

part of the wire to pavement milling, which has more of an affect (supposedly) than more asphalt because (as it was explained to me) the pavement doesn't interact with the magnetic field, so it doesn't diminish it either. I say insulation is insulation,,
Milling however can destroy an entire intersection of sections are milled away to the point of open circuit.

By asskicknchicken 1191873690 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveFirst of all, the difference between a car and a motorcycle in this case is not the weight, its the ammount of circuits and stuff that makes electrmagnetic fields that can change the light to green.
The magnets that he put are to make a bigger field, the force of the field is bigger as is closer to the center and then disapears.I think that the asfalt doesnt matter, what makes the differnce is a bigger field that can go stronger in longer distances.Hope im right

By knowmore 1190620004 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYes this how the loop detector works but along with the detector is a timer delay. These timers allow the main arterial streets to continue to allow traffic to flow. So even when you trip the detector you still may have to wait.....
By Friar 1190306468 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThere is an algorithm that gives the necessary time to each side of the road in order to obtain the better possible trafic flow. You can get the green light almost immediatly only if you are the first vehicle arrived ...

By stevenscorsese 1190299950 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHowever i live in Sweden and most of our traffic lights are equiped with magnetic AND pressuresensitive breakers, so you dont really need to boost the magnetic charge. in Sweden we got radiocontrolled traffic lights ( for busses, police, abulance etc ) one time I managed to "record" that signal with a all-in-one remote control, then I was able to change the light at will, very cool

By savage_dog 1190472609 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt works the same as a metal detector. The more metal in the vehicle the greater chance for the loop to detect it. The loop is placed under the pavement. I love it when you see some idiot out jumping up and down on the pavement.
By Bruceman 1190397162 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIn the UK they use motion sensors on the actual lights so there is no problem with not detecting vehicles.

By fishin4daze 1190242168 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThose detectors work on electromagnetic induction. A current is sen through the wire in the ground, then the vehicle gets a brief magnetic field and conducts electricity back into the wire.
In order for this to work, the magnet would have to be put on a motor and rotated so that it conducts electricity.
I meant to say "so that it is inducing current onto the wire."
By stands2reason 1198334098 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf you do this is it considered illegal? Is it true you can flash your lights at the signal to make it change? Is that what causes ambulences and cop cars to change the light fast?
