A near flying plane is being hit. Incredible, how could that happen?

  • F-14??

dude the guy says it clearly (F-18 hornet) you must be hispanic.

    • yes

and if you know anything about planes, you can clearly see that the bomb dropper is a Lockheed/Martin F/A-18 Hornet, not to mention the fact that the Grumman F-14 Tomcat cannot drop bombs! They are purely an air-to-air Interceptor.

    • Actually.....

The F-14 can drop bombs, well, theres a specific variant that was made capable. However it was'nt used much.

    • Ooops...got that wrong.

The F-14 originally only had air-to-air capability. Later the F-14 was reconfigured (sometimes referred to as the BombCat) and was a very capable air-to-ground attach aircraft.

  • Are we not allies?

I'm American, that mean's I happen to have a relative who was a german fighter pilot in ww1, and an R.F.C. fighter pilot who was one of the highest scoring allied aces of the war. I don't pick favorites, every air force has their Red Barons. It's a dangerous profession deal with it, most all nations have and continue to build great aircraft. You play with fire your going to get burned . Doesn't matter who you are or what your flying.

  • Bomb? I didnt see any bomb..

Ok, that was a F18 and an A4, weve established that. However, there was no bomb...it was a missle. There is a distinct difference. And nothing was launched, did you see anything coming out of the back of the missle? I didnt. You ever had a car break down? Thats what happened here...just a malfunction. I was an AO in the military...I put the missles on the plane myself....

Brilliant, How could they not know that

By hardman2c 1198703459 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • The problem is

the MK-82 "Snakeye" that they were attempting to drop still had it's launcher/rack assembly attached to it. Once the rack caught the airstream is when the trouble happened. They may have been testing how the bomb would fall if jettisoned with the bomb rack/pylon attached to it or the pilot could have just made a mistake and jettisoned both instead of just the bomb itself. The bomb has stabilization devices on it that would have prevented this from happened but they were not deployed as they have to be separated from the pylon for this to occur.

  • What i see

Mk, i can recognise the lower plane as an F-18 and the top one as an A-4. And it was definetely an accident cuz not only the bomb came off but the whole pylon did too, Why the pylon came off i have no idea but i have heard of such things happening in places such as vietnam when pilots where flying into the north through the mountains at high speeds but this guy was just flying straight. Yeh and though the pilots came out, as "cat.in.the.hat" said, it doesnt seem like they came out unharmed...

By takas 1142193519 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • They're...

    1. F-18A Hornet
    2. A-4 Skyhawk (behind of F-18)
    3. NO F-14, at least that's what I saw here... :-p
    4. Bomb? Where?

By ^456^ 1142169897 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • What really happened.

Yeah, they deployed alright...but what we dont hear is that when they are found in the bay, they were burnt worse than a 3 year olds marshmallow on a camping trip.

amateur speculation and bullshit. lower craft - fa/18. upper craft - a/4. fod - dummy ordnance nacelle. cause(s) of accident - see official report. questions - refer to nwttc, china lake, ca, usa.

realy you think they'd have done computer simulations or something and worked out that that drop tank was going to take that path...

By KX36 1141861267 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • That was safe?

Turbulance.... is it me or do you guys think the trained pilots and proffesionals should have compensated and knew the dangers involved?

  • Uhh... F-18?

The narrator clearly calls it an F-18, not F-14. F-14s are much bogger, and have sweepable wings.

PPL notice when the camera is filming both of the planes at the same time that means the camera is on the ground, then notice the view from the (F-18 HORNET) when the bomb is released YOU SEE HOW FAR LAND IS??? what kind of camera is that?

why don't they buy our european planes ?
so much more efficient and safe !

By frogeater 1141811725 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • American technology... exactly!

Something you did not know...some european aircraft are fine flying machines...but almost all of them use AMERICAN TECHNOLOGY...one way or the other. And...the A4 Skyhawk (the hit plane) is one of the finest aircraft ever built... If you don't believe me, please ask the Blue Angels...

By reidener 1141853219 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • American Tech,yes,But

Sure many European a/c have US technology...but the pilots are trained NOT to drop bombs or drop tanks on each other, its a European thing to be careful and have pride in their work. Ex RAF man

By CapnPellew 1141888981 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • No offense meant...

Capn, I am sure american pilots have pride in their work, too...and they sure aren't trained to drop bombs or drop tanks on each other... taking into account the huge amount of missions perfomed per day by the american armed forces, its a surprise -and proof of excellent training- that there aren't more accidents like this one. And, please take a look at the video again: the pilot in the Hornet didn't drop the tank on the A4... the tank flew sideways and upwards (wing vortex?) It clearly was an accident. The A4 could have been a Jaguar or an Eurofighter for that matter... wouldn't have made any difference in the outcome... don't you think?

    • Friendly Fire

Come on, the Yanks invented Friendly Fire - they're so trigger happy that if they haven't got some unarmed Iraqi civilians to be killing they've got to give their comrades their best shot. You're a bunch of incompetent morons, and your technology and engineering are world famous for being shite.

Take the Space Shuttle - 114 missions flown and only 2 complete catastrophes.... fantastic odds....

As a nation you should keep your feet on the ground and content yourselves with driving around in your over-sized fuel- guzzling shitey Fords.

    • Space Shuttles and Fords

And how many space missions shall we please write down as performed by the british?
Talk about Fords...they keep selling...unlike your 'quality' Rovers...

By reidener 1142275708 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • You're wrong...

Rovers are not qualty cars - they're rubbish, just like Fords.

However, to my recollection, not a single British Astronaut has died during a mission.

2 out of 114, what else must we say to you?

These are planes that have been in service since I was a kid! I'd take our air force over any in europe any day of the week! Good thing we're all on the same side eh?

    • U.S. B.U.M.S. (A.K.A - arses)

The U.S. couldn't construct a decent war if they were asleep or dreaming. Where as most wars in history are fought for land and greed from days gone way way by............ the U.S. just muscle in where they are really not wanted (mostly everywhere else in the world) - doesn't matter what technology they have - they don't have much thinking or reasoning capacity anyway...... also they sometimes enjoy dropping a few bombs on their own allies as well as enimies - just to see what they can get away with......... such superior technology and training I don't think that mistakes are that easily made - ( U.S. of arses.)

    • WWII and the UK

If I remember correctly (and I do) the UK stayed alive primarily due to US lend-lease assistance, and for the most part, US technology. I will allow that the UK made contributions as well to the overall effort in winning the war (radar), but Dunkirk (for example) wasn't one of their brightest shining moments...

I'm so glad my fellow American's have succintly put this matter abt American efficiency and capability, past and present, to rest. I'll just like to add that anyone from whatever country who thinks using this incident as a means of poking at American credibility is a good idea is simply unjust, incredibly petty and ultimately very stupid indeed. Its as pathetic as a drowning man grasping at straws, ok? So give it a rest. It was a simple accident. In a situation where u have many ppl working together as one, there r bound to be mistakes sometimes. Someone obviously didn't tighten something properly and that's it. I've heard of incidents in the British Army for example, where u have "blue on blue" firing. Its all part of foul ups that happens every once in a while.

You sir, seem to be one of those ... the incidebt in question happened in 1980 or there about ... I see pictures of RAF/RN aircraft carrying American made AMRAAM and Sidewinder missles, I've seen RAF/RN F-4 Phantoms ... I've never seen a british spacecraft launch british astronauts ... ever ...
