"Another aspect of the support we like to create for each resident is again to understand, just from an activity interest, what they enjoy. We do have a lot of things in our activities program that are entertaining. It’s fun to be entertained but it’s even so much more enjoyable to be able to engage them in activities that, as best as possible, reflect activities they’ve always done. We want to maintain the level of care that they’ve enjoyed or their level of interest as best we can.

For example, not just the ladies but a lot of the gentlemen love to do home repairs. It sounds simple but it’s nice. We’ll sit down with some the residents and describe that we have a faucet that’s leaking n room seven, or we need to fix a birdhouse out in the yard this week. We come up with little knickknack activities that are just geared towards maintaining a home. We’ll go to Home Depot and buy the parts and plan out how we’re going to do the repair and then we’ll gather together and use the tools and do simple repairs just to help them feel like they have a part to play, like they have something they can continue to contribute.

So it’s not all about just entertaining them, but engaging them in things that they would be doing if they were still in their own homes. So beyond the maintenance side, the ladies love to cook. We like to go down to the nursery and pick out the flowers we’re going to plant and go out and plant the flower baskets together. We have a garden area that a lot of the ladies like to work and maintain. We wash windows, we’ll do cleaning around the house together, just simple things they can do to make them feel like they still have skills and abilities and they can still help out. That way they’re not simply being waited on.

One thing I really enjoy is getting to know the family so I’d love to meet you. We would love to have you come by and just talk and share the needs you’re looking for and let us see if we can best meet those needs."
