No, don't use cotton balls, they'll burn. The whole point of using the fiberglass is because it won't burn.

By tha frozen 1190833275 Reply Spam [+16] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove(1) What is Heet? Is it some kind of lighter fluid?
(2) Now that the stove is lit, how do you turn it off?
It's made of around 90 % methanol. You can find it in almost any gas station.
This particular stove is easy to put out, much like a candle. It will also burn itself out within about 10 minutes at most.
That is fantastic, I want to try that! Any way to adjust the intensity of the flame? adding more Heet maybe? The flame looked pretty small when you first ignited it.
Great job, I hope to see more stuff like this.
Adding more Heet doesn't really effect the flame, just makes it burn longer. There are mods where you can insert a small ring with holes beneath the rim of the stove. When you turn the ring it makes the holes the flame comes out of larger or smaller, making your flame larger or smaller.
The flame is small to start with, it takes about a minute to get going, but this thing really isn't for simmering. Make the water hot, dump in your dehydrated hiker food, cook it as fast as you can because you are hungry.
very handy and looks nice too!

By pvscpew 1190774892 Reply Spam [+16] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf you bring enough fuel.
A few table spoons is enough to boil a pot of water.
If you use denatured alcohol instead, it will burn even longer on the same amount of fuel.
Denatured alcohol is harder to find, though. It's also called Methyl Spirits.

By BlackLotusNet 1190867919 Reply Spam [+15] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI made a few of these today, and they work great! I couldn't find Heet (I'm in Canada, not sure if they sell that here) so I used nail polish remover instead. Works fantastic and for a long time (big flames if you put a lot), although it leaves a nasty smell. I'll try to find a better fuel, anyone have some recommendations?
And I had problems with a flame coming out the fill holes, so I fixed that by dropping a penny on to the fill holes after it was lit (kind of like the penny stove).
Thanks again!
If you don't use an alcohol based fuel, the stove could easily explode. Petroleum based fuels are too volatile.
The other fuels that work well are denatured alcohol (also called methyl spirits - find it at a paint store), everclear (the kind you drink - 150 proof), and 91% rubbing alcohol.
I listed those in order of efficiency. Denatured alcohol burns the hottest and lasts the longest.

By NK5 1190779882 Reply Spam [+12] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe windscreen also keeps the heat focused up into the stove. By nez3 1190820333 Reply Spam [+14] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAs shown, it will burn just long enough to boil a pot of water, or about 5 minutes.
You can easily make it last longer by making it bigger and use more efficient fuel like denatured alcohol.
The can is nearly indestructible. Aluminum won't melt at these temperatures.
I can just leave the old Coleman at home and cook with Alcoa! Question: How long do these stoves cook with the 2 teaspoons of Heet and how many times can these stoves be used? Keep posting the useful and practical ideas! 500 stars!
By legendary240 1190809778 Reply Spam [+14] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI'll post again. My other reply seems to be missing now.
I used about three tablespoons of HEET to biol that pot of water. If I had used denatured alcohol, I could have easily boiled two pots, as it burns much more efficiently.
These little buggers are extremely rugged and long lasting. I have read that people have used the same can stove for 20 years!

By Forthac 1191170376 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveTrangia is making camping stoves with this kind of heater.
Check out their design to improve your own.
If you put the filler holes away from the center you will create a small bowl that will contain alcohol after you fill the stove.
It should be able to be lit and preheat the stove. I haven't tried it but it should work.

By sheezy! 1191135421 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removekerosene would work if you put a wick in the center and the sides were air holes, then the fuel wouldn't evaporate when you're not using it.

By god.favored 1204971500 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei use butane from a lighter refill to prime it. just push the nozzle against one of the holes and light it. the butane will burn for around 30 seconds then the heet will start to burn ;) no more burning yourself.

By vicky_2007 1193917926 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebut just curious is that a better heat supply than just a can of sterno ?, don't get me wrong ,I think its an awesome stove, and it even looks like a real stove how it burns, but does it work better than sterno
I think there really cheap the sterno cans
The reason this is better than Sterno is the weight. Ten of these cans and the fuel will weigh less than one Sterno stove.

nice one
One of the more practical educational vids. on Metacafe.
Thanks dude.
This stove will not work without a priming pan. You cannot just hold a lighter under it for a few seconds to prime it.
By unrealtrip 1193183988 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe preheating only takes a few seconds. The goal is to turn some of the liquid into vapor so you can light it.
What you see in the video was not staged. It really took that small amount of time to preheat. Once you can no longer hold onto the can without burning your fingers, the preheating is complete - 15 seconds max.

does it burn though?
By absynth 1190797090 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyeah, thru hikers (people doing the AT, PCT, CDT) have been using these for years, mostly because they weigh next to nothing (like .5 oz). They are so popular resupply stops will carry HEET just for the hikers to use. Great video though, blows away any of the old step-by-step instructions i have seen/used before.
