can i use lighter fluid or kerosene instead using heet??
and use cotton instead of fiberglass?
      Pls...I need your help...

      By tappers 1246814363
    • re: pls help me!!

No, don't use cotton balls, they'll burn. The whole point of using the fiberglass is because it won't burn.

      By Artsyficial 1190803448
    • Ahh, yess

Everclear works very well, burns clean, and lasts a good time.

Just don't drink any before trying to make the stove or it will end up looking like something that fell off a car on the freeway!

      By GBprod 1190787860
    • Totally Agree!

Nice idea and very well presented. EXCELLENT! 90% Isopropyl alchohol works great too ( already made one =) or probably Everclear, although I haven't tried that yet, cause I'd probably wind up drinking it...

      By babblin5 1190782101
    • Good but !

What about the possibility of fuel leakage from that home made stove? Also, what about the vailidity and durability of the fiberglass? Finaly, what about security of that stove ?

      By enormous nose 1191076525
    • OUCH!!

I made this stove EXACTLY as you told me but ended up slicing my arm off with the utility blade!!! Then when i tried to preheat the stove it blew up taking my other arm off!!!!! So i watched the video again and tried it again but this time blew both my F**king legs off !!!!!! 5 STARS

    By RisqKC 1190772355
    • Yes!

It does. It actually is more efficient, too It is a bit harder to find for some reason, though.

You can find HEET (Methanol) at almost any gas station.

      By NK5 1190774274
  • Everclear is better

That way you can get sloshed and have enough left for the stove

    By hazardus 1190771804
    • Yes it is

      Thanks for that.

Everclear is expensive, but burns well and you can drink it.

But nice, i could see myself camping with no stove and trying to remember the instructions from your video :)

Especially here in Colorado. We are almost always on fire restrictions.

how long did it take to biol that water?

    By frankblack0907 1190771084

  • too small

how much cooking do you expect to do? whats wrong with sterno

    By francine68 1190771405
    • Supposed to be small!

It's portable. It's mostly for backpacking or camping emergencies, like when camp fires are not allowed.

Sterno is good, but it's heavy.

      By NK5 1190773714

i need to know.. what other kind of oil i can use to replace the heet? im having trouble to find one... please reply.. thanks

    By khalis 1190834012
    • There are a couple of options

Everclear (150 proof drinking alcohol), Isopropyl Alcohol (get at least 91% at Walgreens or another pharmacy), or denatured alcohol (methyl spirits).

      Denatured alcohol works best.

      By NK5 1190851159
  • AHAHA

EVEN MACGYVER WOULD BE PROUD hahaha 5 stars man

    By tha frozen 1190833275
  • Just a couple of questions

    (1) What is Heet? Is it some kind of lighter fluid?

    (2) Now that the stove is lit, how do you turn it off?

    By rickyk2 1190821612
    • Heet is a fuel additive

It's made of around 90 % methanol. You can find it in almost any gas station.

This particular stove is easy to put out, much like a candle. It will also burn itself out within about 10 minutes at most.

      By NK5 1190823841
  • Wow

That is fantastic, I want to try that! Any way to adjust the intensity of the flame? adding more Heet maybe? The flame looked pretty small when you first ignited it.

Great job, I hope to see more stuff like this.

    By shoeskid 1190817539
    • Yep

Adding more Heet doesn't really effect the flame, just makes it burn longer. There are mods where you can insert a small ring with holes beneath the rim of the stove. When you turn the ring it makes the holes the flame comes out of larger or smaller, making your flame larger or smaller.

The flame is small to start with, it takes about a minute to get going, but this thing really isn't for simmering. Make the water hot, dump in your dehydrated hiker food, cook it as fast as you can because you are hungry.

      By NK5 1190776299
  • how long will it burn

can you cook a whole meal with it?

    By pvscpew 1190774892
    • Sure!

      If you bring enough fuel.

A few table spoons is enough to boil a pot of water.

If you use denatured alcohol instead, it will burn even longer on the same amount of fuel.

Denatured alcohol is harder to find, though. It's also called Methyl Spirits.

You would need to wait till it goes out on its own?

Is there any way to put it out instantly?

Except putting water all over it :P

    By BlueJoe 1190772146
    • It will burn itself out

Or you can blow on it up close.

This particular type of can stove isn't very wind proof.

Ask KipKay how to make a wind shield out of some tin foil and a box.

      By NK5 1190772625

    whats a "Heet"?

    By sha_007 1190915770
    • Heet is a fuel additive

You can find it at most gas stations in the US.

Alternative fuels are Denatured alcohol (methyl spirits - find it where paint is sold), everclear (150% drinking alcohol) and 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

    By prometheus5500 1190872395

That's actually what I used. I just grabbed some from the basement isulation.

      By NK5 1190895785
  • Very useful tip!

    5/5!

    By BlackLotusNet 1190867919
  • Works!

I made a few of these today, and they work great! I couldn't find Heet (I'm in Canada, not sure if they sell that here) so I used nail polish remover instead. Works fantastic and for a long time (big flames if you put a lot), although it leaves a nasty smell. I'll try to find a better fuel, anyone have some recommendations?

And I had problems with a flame coming out the fill holes, so I fixed that by dropping a penny on to the fill holes after it was lit (kind of like the penny stove).

    Thanks again!

    By shoeskid 1190864873
    • Very good, but be careful!

If you don't use an alcohol based fuel, the stove could easily explode. Petroleum based fuels are too volatile.

The other fuels that work well are denatured alcohol (also called methyl spirits - find it at a paint store), everclear (the kind you drink - 150 proof), and 91% rubbing alcohol.

I listed those in order of efficiency. Denatured alcohol burns the hottest and lasts the longest.

  • ehhh..

    how long does it last?

    By clownn88 1190850093
    • Depends on the fuel

If you use denatured alcohol, a few tablespoons will easily boil a couple of pots of water before burning through all the fuel.

One little bottle of HEET will last you several camping trips.

      By NK5 1190851455

This has been around for years, and in various forms.

I took bits from different designs and combined them into the most simplistic and easy to make version, then made a video of it.

  • gas?

can you burn gas instead of heet?

    By sweetcheeks99 1190784573
    • You could..

      ..but only once.

The vapors would likely explode the can, giving you third degree burns and shrapnel. No joke.

Use only alcohol based fuels in this stove! Everclear, methyl spirits (denatured alcohol), methanol, ethanol, etc...

  • wind screen needed?

do you need a wind screen with this for camping?

    By lococabesa 1190776843
    • It would help

This little guy isn't very wind proof as shown.

      By NK5 1190779882
    • Windscreen is a must

The windscreen also keeps the heat focused up into the stove. I liked using just a piece of aluminum foil that I could wrap around the base of my pot. This saves probably about 30-40% of the heat that otherwise would escape out the sides.

      By pantsmcgee 1190821575
  • will rubbing alcohol work too?

i have lots of that around the house

    By s9qok4zxa6 1190776405
    • Sort of.

You want the stuff that is 91% or higher. Walgreens sells it.

Otherwise, it burns very yellow and leaves a lot of soot. It's also not very efficient and you will burn through a lot more of it faster.

    By EnjoyMQ 1190775420

  • Awesome job

    how long will it last??

    By nez3 1190820333
    • The burn or the can?

As shown, it will burn just long enough to boil a pot of water, or about 5 minutes.

You can easily make it last longer by making it bigger and use more efficient fuel like denatured alcohol.

The can is nearly indestructible. Aluminum won't melt at these temperatures.

      By NK5 1190821154
  • Dude I LOVE IT!

I can just leave the old Coleman at home and cook with Alcoa! Question: How long do these stoves cook with the 2 teaspoons of Heet and how many times can these stoves be used? Keep posting the useful and practical ideas! 500 stars!

    By legendary240 1190809778
    • Thanks!

I'll post again. My other reply seems to be missing now.

I used about three tablespoons of HEET to biol that pot of water. If I had used denatured alcohol, I could have easily boiled two pots, as it burns much more efficiently.

These little buggers are extremely rugged and long lasting. I have read that people have used the same can stove for 20 years!

If you put the filler holes away from the center you will create a small bowl that will contain alcohol after you fill the stove.

but just curious is that a better heat supply than just a can of sterno ?, don't get me wrong ,I think its an awesome stove, and it even looks like a real stove how it burns, but does it work better than sterno
I think there really cheap the sterno cans

    By lordfalcon 1193336812

The reason this is better than Sterno is the weight. Ten of these cans and the fuel will weigh less than one Sterno stove.

  • Incomplete instructions

This stove will not work without a priming pan. You cannot just hold a lighter under it for a few seconds to prime it.

    By unrealtrip 1193183988
    • Not true

The preheating only takes a few seconds. The goal is to turn some of the liquid into vapor so you can light it.

What you see in the video was not staged. It really took that small amount of time to preheat. Once you can no longer hold onto the can without burning your fingers, the preheating is complete - 15 seconds max.

They are so popular resupply stops will carry HEET just for the hikers to use. Great video though, blows away any of the old step-by-step instructions i have seen/used before.
