  • Well...

It does have a very slight benefit in high compression, high RPM race aoplications, where flame propogation is critical as spark advance is as much as 30 degrees BTDC and the high octane fuel (which is actually more resistant to ignition) must get burning ASAP to avoid loosing power...but in low compression, low rpm street applications you probably won't notice much...other than your plugs wearing out faster than normal...

    • hi

Reduce that by what? And how do you reduce it?

By eternian 1201584970 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
      • he said..

Reduce by .010 of an inch. He also mentioned be careful cuz this can cause detonation..i think ill avoid this tip...and you probably should too...

      • HI

You should reduce the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode by about .010 from the manufacture gap setting. What I said may cause detonation is if you were to leave burs after cutting the side electrode as the burs could heat up to glowing red.

          this may cause detonation!!

          • It shouldn't

cause detonation if you do it correctly and remove any burrs. Detonation occurs if you were to leave burrs that heat up to glowing red or if you were to mess with the timing of the engine.

        • Not new

these plugs have been available for years, check catalogues and order.

          • If it is so great,

why don't they sell them like that? Or at least give you the choice to buy them already made like that if you want them?

I think its the truth as you can see on the website of NGK in this link

Click on the bottom right picture link on the image of the spark plug...

              • Somehow

My original comment got deleted but someone asked how does side gapping work. It works because by cutting the ground electrode you are un shrouding the spark so the flame created by the spark will propagate faster resulting in a more complete burning of the fuel air mixture before the exhaust valve opens.

This is my first video I should have wrote this in the description but I didn't think of it at the time of posting and I can't figure out how to edit the description if it is even possible.

                • I'm no mechanic, but

I know enough to understand that this modification will not hurt your engine. The excess heat concept doesn't make sense. The idea here is that you're modding the spark plug to get a better spark. I seriously doubt that the engine manufacturer designed the engine to have a limited quality of spark from the spark plug. This modification is only improving the performance of your spark plug. It doesn't affect anything else about the performance of the engine itself, except that it might run more smoothly and more efficiently. That's just common sense.

                • One things

for sure this should void any car warranty, this modification will make your engine run hotter, you compare this modification to splitfire and bosch those plugs are designed from the ground up to compensate for the extra heat, before you call me names i've been doing tune ups for 30 years.

                  • spark plugs Do Not

produce heat go to ngk spark plugs website then goto tech support then Technical Overviews spark plugs and read for yourself

                  • Extra heat?

Not for the engine. That's why it has antifreeze/coolant. The plug might fire slightly hotter but today's electronic ignitions systems compensate firing timing enough for such a slight mod. Your thinking with a 30 yr old mindset...points and condensers are long gone.
