Like BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Leica cameras, Oktoberfest is a German export that has taken root beyond its origins. In the US, it has enjoyed a mainstream journey via bars and breweries and their annual fall promotions. But like in Germany, there's more to it in the USA than just hoisting a krug, mug, bottle or pint glass filled with the season's great-tasting malty beers. It's the conviviality that comes from being in the company of friends. Oh, yeah, there's some pretty cool outfits, dancing and hearty food. With all that going for it, it's a wonder Oktoberfest hasn't also become an end-of-grill season backyard party in suburban America. (Maybe it just will.)
