      without the condescending overtone of the last guy to answer: This plane can hold probablty a few thousand people. Stacked in like cord-wood, of course. It has only a few seats for it's crew, but that doesn't change the fact that it COULD carry a whole whack of people.

      Sure it's ugly... and it's not very economical because of the large cross-section. So it eats a lot more fuel than a standard plane. But it can also carry cargo that would not normally fit in other transport planes. So... for such cargo... you have 2 choices: Send it by ship and it will take long to get there, or send it by this ugly plane, and it will be expensive but it will get there fast. So... in a specialized way, it's useful.
