You left off the part about it being illegal and EASILY detectable by the telephone company.

What about legality of this? I much prefer a solar panel and a deep cycle battery or two for power backup.

    • Illegal yes...practical indeed!

I've known and used this trick for years. And trust me when the power goes out for 1month and u need a flash light to go turn off the water mains...etc etc etc You won't really care if this is legal or not. I love using this when we had the Ice storm for 1 month!!!

    • Who gives a crap if it is illegal

If it were really an emergency would you care whether it was illegal or not.

It illegal to speed. Does that stop you from speeding the the hospital, NO!

SO DON'T BE A JACKASS AND RESERVE THIS HACK FOR TRUE EMERGENCIES (like the end of the world and such)

    • Please tell me what is illegal...

you must not know your laws, science or circuit design. Nothing remotely illegal about this. You are inside your own home, using 'electricity' that you pay for.

    • Don't do this in the Uk.

Same as check-it-out, here in england all electronic equipment needs to be approved before connecting to a phone line. This is an offense , so I wouldn't try it.

On another point, I though UK systems run at about 6-12volts? and only exceed this when it rings?

By howie90 1193401074 Reply Spam [+9] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • dont know about your country..

but in Australia if you connect a device that is not approved to the phone system it is an offence under the telecommunications act.

I think you produce quality videos with absolute originality and amazing ideas, but i think the $$$ are a temptation to some stuff that could undermine your integrity.

The traffic light one is dubious in its effectiveness, the laser one is irresponsible and will inevitably hurt someone and this one could result in someone being heavily fined.

Most of your videos are amazing and deserve their rewards.. dont be tempted to sell out, brother.

By Check-it-out 1192401949 Reply Spam [+6] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • It is illegal in Romania,

because you're entitled to use only a reasonable amount of power. By contract you're bound not to exceed let's say 2-3 REN (ringer equivalent). If people start consuming more than a phone, eventually the telecom will fail.

I like your videos, but don't sell out, Kipkay!

Would it illegal to post how to access a particular phone co. D Base, so that you could place yourself on the payroll?

By randomevo 1192497124 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • No

That would not be illegal to post how to do it. It is not illegal to post how to build a nuclear bomb. But, doing it is where it becomes illegal. Look at all the bombs on this site and sites like it. Sure, those are illegal to make (in most areas). But it is not illegal to post how to do it. As far as putting yourself on the payroll goes, you are better off going to school and getting a job there. Getting jobs in phone companies isnt all that hard. People arent exactly lining up outside because they want to go into tons of goofy peoples houses and crawl around in the dark muddy crawl space to run wires.

By They Call Me Slev 1192548748 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Actually....

Showing how a nuclear bomb is built would probably be classed either:
      - inciting terroism
      - conspiracy to commit terrorism
      - or just plain 'ol terrorism.

So shut up I don't give

i agree .... that this can be detected but once a wile is okay

By Extinguisher33 1223148562 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • no, it isnt illegal...

...as long as you are paying for the phone service to the source. The phone company doesn't care what you use the line for as long as you are paying for it. The phone company provides the dial tone to the interface (the phone box or D-mark as it is also known as) from there the line is usually run into the house where the phone jacks are located. After the interface the phone company has no say what so ever about those lines, in fact we could care less if you run them all over town to provide phones for all your neighbors....as long as the lines are being pain for.

Only problem is that a basic 2 pair phone line will have a little bit of power like the video shows, but it is not steady. It will fluctuate drastically through out the day. It will spike to about 78 volts when there is an incoming call but will sit idle at around 48-53 volts (or less as the neighborhood phone usage increases)

But in theory its a cool little idea to run a light or something small

    • WAKE UP!

It is a new source of electricity and not really free.. you pay the phone company for the phone service...the service provides this power to operate the equipment. The only way it would be illegal if you tapped into the phone company and were not paying for the phone line. Bottom line is you are just using your paid for resources more efficiently.

EASILY detectable?? let me ask you a question jk87 - when you went to school, did a short yellow bus with an elevator pick you up? You've been watching too much CSI, my friend. How would they know? because of the HUGE extra draw of 50 volts or so? Jealousy is such an ugly thing. Kip - "they mock that which they cannot understand."

  • Wow very irresponsible

wow, this is extremely dangerous and the author of this video should be ashamed of how irresponsible he is. The phone line is designed for VERY LOW current, neglecting the voltage. If you draw too much power though the line you have the chance of starting a fire in the wall or destroying the line. Im not saying that this is a very bad idea, I'm saying the the author should be ashamed of himself for posting this without any sort of warnings or explanations. If you do not understand electricity, you should not attempt this. Period.

By eventnick 1192330501 Reply Spam [+18] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • It seems that you

know just enough to make yourself look stupid!! The phone co has what's called a current limit monitor on the line. even with a complete short the wires are in no danger of overheating and starting a fire. if you do noy understand electricity you should not comment about it!! Kipkay made no warning because it was not necessary!!

too bad its not a current source jackass. Its a voltage source and if you dont think that you can start a nice fire with 50-100 volt... I dont know what to tell you except nice knowing you.

To the first post above mine, I did not know there was current limit monitor on phone lines.. Thanks! However, dont you think that would have been worth noting in the video so that someone doesnt try to pull too much through and alert the phone company or cause their device to malfunction?

Does anybody here actually have any idea what the current limit is?

it is safe don't worry, if he uses allot of power then the servers of the phone company would get off, mean while S**king too much current by the bulb can cause the server to stop sending phone signals automatically. then the phone would be off. then why are u talking about Fire? there is no fire, because of low current.

By Samimy 1192365576 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • Don't do it

I worked for over 10 years installing and maintaining phone line monitoring equipment, it monitors the line and will report the increase in load. The lines use 50 volts due to the distance the signal must travel, there is no protection except at the junction so if you do this wrong you can cause big problems.
Also if the line monitor detects a change in the line voltage it will report a fault, the phone company is only responsible up to the socket so if they rewire the circuit then conclude the fault is in your house you could get the bill. So don't say I didn't warn anyone.

Do not do this. No, its not detectable but you risk damaging inside wiring and equipment. its called REN. Its been around since phones had actual bells ringers on them. Yes you're VOIP modems have it and are generally at about 3 REN. Again, don't be an idiot, plug you're $3 flashlight in the wall where it belongs.

  • Not to mention it's...

a federal crime, and the safety issue has nothing to do with circuit design or voltage, but with the current (amperage). Phone cords and jacks are not rated for that level of amperage. The older, light-up phones had a MUCH larger cord. Today's phone cords are much smaller and more flexible. Just cause it has worked for years w/o a problem does not mean it's a good idea.

I have a Moto SurfBoard Cable/VoIP modem that supplies the power and with a backup battery too. A VoIP modem would not be a good idea because in a power outage, the battery would drain, but it is not tapping the phone company's grid so VoIP is in ways better and worse. Also, I checked with local VZ and they said it is legal to do this but is not recommended since I do not have the proper knowledge or equipment to utilize it properly. Also notice that in phones that do not have an external power source have transformers in them and also do not have CID display because of low current. My knowledge, so please bring up yours if I'm wrong here.

But he was accidentally putting 240 v back into the phone lines, which then shorted or something and burnt half his house down.

I was surprised with your traffic light video where you press the buttons to change the lights. I've made a traffic light program and really dont understand how that trick works. Just impressed with your knowledge.

Love the video. Im gonna give it a try just to give it a try. But, could you possibly see if you can find a way to make it so my cable phone (vongo, comcast digital voice.......) could still work in a power outage? I know that a landline does not pull enough power through, but im guessing with a few batteries, or some other cool hack, you could make it happen.

  • Bridge Rectifier not needed

The voltage that comes out of a phone outlet is DC (as opposed to AC which comes out of the wall). I noticed that even your meter is set to DC Volts. The purpose of a bridge rectified is to convert AC voltage to DC. You should be able to accomplish this with only an LM7812 voltage regulator to bring it down to 12 volts.

the morality of this is quite questionable, and you should have at least included a warning about the legality issues.

Everytime someone post a video, someone either says it's fake or how illegal it is, or they already knew about it. I thinks it's because they have no life and are jealous someone else has the brains to come up with it. Awsome vid, not illegal in ithe least, just using what is already there! Thanks Kip. • Quality isn't everything

No one is disputing the production quality of Kip's videos. The videos are well edited and are usually decent quality.

On the other hand, creating a video that advises people to perform dangerous and illegal modification is less than honorable. As several others have explained, this kind of project is illegal in most countries, despite Kip's intuition that you *might* evade detection. Furthermore, its dangerous since you're working with higher than normal voltages, even if it's current limited.

  • Its not illegal

as long as you are paying for the phone service to the source.

This is like taking the gas out of the mail truck who delievers our mail. Also like our politicians who use our taxs for their own self servering desires. Do you also hire a plumber then use his FREE truck to pickup stuff while he is not looking? The truth is the phone company pays to produce the power and then passes the cost on to everyone. Thanks for adding costs.

FCC part 68 is where you find the legal stuff.

IT is only free until you get caught.

His circuit has no fuses or other protection in it. If perchance this things shorts with 50 volts on it you could get a 50 amp surge through these elctronic devices. thats eoungh to start a fire. If you burn up part of your house and the fire deptment determines you have a home made device that caused it. not some UL listed device that has gone through TESTING then you are SCREWED!
