I reveal a secret the power company and phone company don't want you to know about! Great for emergency power too!
You left off the part about it being illegal and EASILY detectable by the telephone company.
By jk87 1192324242 Reply Spam [+57] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhat about legality of this? I much prefer a solar panel and a deep cycle battery or two for power backup.
By cowsgonemadd3 1192328419 Reply Spam [+14] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeguys it is just a video, it just sucks the budget of Metacafe, you do not have to make it on ur home, even kip does not like use it.
because it is useless:) juts take it easy. and enjoy watching..
available for a limited time Build BU you own if BU is critical for you
By westkan 1193778834 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI've known and used this trick for years. And trust me when the power goes out for 1month and u need a flash light to go turn off the water mains...etc etc etc You won't really care if this is legal or not. I love using this when we had the Ice storm for 1 month!!!
By Pixelized 1192563627 Reply Spam [+10] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf it were really an emergency would you care whether it was illegal or not.
It illegal to speed. Does that stop you from speeding the the hospital, NO!
SO DON'T BE A JACKASS AND RESERVE THIS HACK FOR TRUE EMERGENCIES (like the end of the world and such)
ENOUGH WITH THE ILLEGAL TALK, WE GOT IT
you must not know your laws, science or circuit design. Nothing remotely illegal about this. You are inside your own home, using 'electricity' that you pay for.
By Kipkay 1192396392 Reply Spam [+7] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveSame as check-it-out, here in england all electronic equipment needs to be approved before connecting to a phone line. This is an offense , so I wouldn't try it.
On another point, I though UK systems run at about 6-12volts? and only exceed this when it rings?
but in Australia if you connect a device that is not approved to the phone system it is an offence under the telecommunications act.
I think you produce quality videos with absolute originality and amazing ideas, but i think the $$$ are a temptation to some stuff that could undermine your integrity.
The traffic light one is dubious in its effectiveness, the laser one is irresponsible and will inevitably hurt someone and this one could result in someone being heavily fined.
Most of your videos are amazing and deserve their rewards.. dont be tempted to sell out, brother.
because you're entitled to use only a reasonable amount of power. By contract you're bound not to exceed let's say 2-3 REN (ringer equivalent). If people start consuming more than a phone, eventually the telecom will fail.
I like your videos, but don't sell out, Kipkay!
acutally this is good information for people that just like to know about things that might come in handy. I dont think hes selling out at all.
By Diverz3d 1196957442 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removein the UK you have 'line rental'...surely if you pay for the phone line you are using...you pay for everything that comes with it, electricity included. great video kip, keep them coming!!
By lukenn 1192466390 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebecause of line rental we can claim anything that comes out of it

By rsxavier212 1192426514 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWould it illegal to post how to access a particular phone co. D Base, so that you could place yourself on the payroll?
By randomevo 1192497124 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat would not be illegal to post how to do it. It is not illegal to post how to build a nuclear bomb. But, doing it is where it becomes illegal. Look at all the bombs on this site and sites like it. Sure, those are illegal to make (in most areas). But it is not illegal to post how to do it. As far as putting yourself on the payroll goes, you are better off going to school and getting a job there. Getting jobs in phone companies isnt all that hard. People arent exactly lining up outside because they want to go into tons of goofy peoples houses and crawl around in the dark muddy crawl space to run wires.
By They Call Me Slev 1192548748 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveShowing how a nuclear bomb is built would probably be classed either:
- inciting terroism
- conspiracy to commit terrorism
- or just plain 'ol terrorism.
None of those vids are illegal in the u.s.. we have the 1st amendment. when i was in school i talked to a cop and they found a guy that was selling meth cookbooks on the web but was set free because of free speech.
By TREK69 1200543156 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei call internet BS, because after working for Law enforcement for 6 years, he would have been called up on conspiracy to manufacture.
By djdragon 1244084619 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewhere has a phone company posted that using the power from the phone isn't allowed? and they cant detect it, it would look the same if someone is on a long call, or left the phone off the hook. DO SOME RESEARCH!
By njadb 1192379615 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebut my "Crazy engine!" is LEGAL!
By dangerartde 1192736572 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveSo shut up I don't give
My phone company is a private company and actually encourages it because they see it as advertising, because I tell my friends
i agree .... that this can be detected but once a wile is okay
By Extinguisher33 1223148562 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove...as long as you are paying for the phone service to the source. The phone company doesn't care what you use the line for as long as you are paying for it. The phone company provides the dial tone to the interface (the phone box or D-mark as it is also known as) from there the line is usually run into the house where the phone jacks are located. After the interface the phone company has no say what so ever about those lines, in fact we could care less if you run them all over town to provide phones for all your neighbors....as long as the lines are being pain for.
Only problem is that a basic 2 pair phone line will have a little bit of power like the video shows, but it is not steady. It will fluctuate drastically through out the day. It will spike to about 78 volts when there is an incoming call but will sit idle at around 48-53 volts (or less as the neighborhood phone usage increases)
But in theory its a cool little idea to run a light or something small
it aint illegal. and how would it be" easily detectable" if the powers out?
By cgamer2021 1200454930 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehow in the world can this be illegal?
By modianos 1200438082 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove

By wannapiece 1192472609 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIn the UK you can buy some strange novelty phones with neon lights built in than run of the phone line power! (or maybe there illegal!)
By kemsley 1192439246 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeooo... bad kip...
By Luxordo5 1192372494 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt is a new source of electricity and not really free.. you pay the phone company for the phone service...the service provides this power to operate the equipment. The only way it would be illegal if you tapped into the phone company and were not paying for the phone line. Bottom line is you are just using your paid for resources more efficiently.
By jaxplane2 1193328565 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveEASILY detectable?? let me ask you a question jk87 - when you went to school, did a short yellow bus with an elevator pick you up? You've been watching too much CSI, my friend. How would they know? because of the HUGE extra draw of 50 volts or so? Jealousy is such an ugly thing. Kip - "they mock that which they cannot understand."
By poiseman007 1192639414 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewow, this is extremely dangerous and the author of this video should be ashamed of how irresponsible he is. The phone line is designed for VERY LOW current, neglecting the voltage. If you draw too much power though the line you have the chance of starting a fire in the wall or destroying the line. Im not saying that this is a very bad idea, I'm saying the the author should be ashamed of himself for posting this without any sort of warnings or explanations. If you do not understand electricity, you should not attempt this. Period.
By eventnick 1192330501 Reply Spam [+18] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeknow just enough to make yourself look stupid!! The phone co has what's called a current limit monitor on the line. even with a complete short the wires are in no danger of overheating and starting a fire. if you do noy understand electricity you should not comment about it!! Kipkay made no warning because it was not necessary!!
By seenitall 1192365106 Reply Spam [+8] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveSarting a fire in the wall from a very low current source. Go to school kid.
By gonzoni 1192395187 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removetoo bad its not a current source jackass. Its a voltage source and if you dont think that you can start a nice fire with 50-100 volt... I dont know what to tell you except nice knowing you.
To the first post above mine, I did not know there was current limit monitor on phone lines.. Thanks! However, dont you think that would have been worth noting in the video so that someone doesnt try to pull too much through and alert the phone company or cause their device to malfunction?
Does anybody here actually have any idea what the current limit is?
You know how I feel KipKay, haha just kidding. Great Idea 5*s
it is safe don't worry, if he uses allot of power then the servers of the phone company would get off, mean while sucking too much current by the bulb can cause the server to stop sending phone signals automatically. then the phone would be off. then why are u talking about Fire? there is no fire, because of low current.
By Samimy 1192333383 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethere are many people know about Electricity, let's see what they would say, it is interesting.
By Samimy 1192365634 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHe said more than once this is a emergency source of energy. And that lamp won't suck too much power.
By Aines 1192347897 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyes he said I heard.
By Samimy 1192365576 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI worked for over 10 years installing and maintaining phone line monitoring equipment, it monitors the line and will report the increase in load. The lines use 50 volts due to the distance the signal must travel, there is no protection except at the junction so if you do this wrong you can cause big problems.
Also if the line monitor detects a change in the line voltage it will report a fault, the phone company is only responsible up to the socket so if they rewire the circuit then conclude the fault is in your house you could get the bill. So don't say I didn't warn anyone.
I knew the phone lines had electricity, but I never thought to actually use it! Genius.
Do you know about cable providers? I have Cox cable, and when the power goes out, the phone goes out too. When I used to have AT

By babblin5 1192314655 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeextremely dangerous.
By Joanncita 1192351902 Reply Spam [+7] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMan you always come up with great ideas, but in this video you should add a warning that " sucking too much voltage from you phone jack can set your house on fire"
By nicenick 1192340075 Reply Spam [+7] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDo not do this. No, its not detectable but you risk damaging inside wiring and equipment. its called REN. Its been around since phones had actual bells ringers on them. Yes you're VOIP modems have it and are generally at about 3 REN. Again, don't be an idiot, plug you're $3 flashlight in the wall where it belongs.
By ambulanceonfire 1192347812 Reply Spam [+6] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is rather dangerous, irresponsible, and illegal. You should take this video down. This doesn't deserve any attention or a nomination of any sort.
By MasonSavage 1192344945 Reply Spam [+6] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt's fine. I licked a phone line once, it tasted funny! How could it be dangerous?
By mushi-man23 1193781945 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethan spend my time working on this. The legality is also in question!
By Blade2000 1192410618 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removefirst I used a double ended blue fisblat then I connected it to a two sided hoho this provided me with 34 fizzavolts. That is just enough to burn out most phones and send us to Wal-Mart for a new phone !
By 4doorford 1192309021 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMakes me wonder if we were to check our phone bills (you know - all those little charges that no one understands) if we'd find that they've been charging us for that power all along???
By instgtr 1192304052 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removea federal crime, and the safety issue has nothing to do with circuit design or voltage, but with the current (amperage). Phone cords and jacks are not rated for that level of amperage. The older, light-up phones had a MUCH larger cord. Today's phone cords are much smaller and more flexible. Just cause it has worked for years w/o a problem does not mean it's a good idea.
By Phinatic70 1193867735 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeif the wires going to the phone were all stripped bare and twisted together?would the phone company burn down or the phone line get red hot and melt?
By gspra64 1192474220 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI hooked up my TV to my phone line and on Sunday whenever someone calls, The Patriots score a touchdown.......
By doctorgary34 1192414564 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI have a Moto SurfBoard Cable/VoIP modem that supplies the power and with a backup battery too. A VoIP modem would not be a good idea because in a power outage, the battery would drain, but it is not tapping the phone company's grid so VoIP is in ways better and worse. Also, I checked with local VZ and they said it is legal to do this but is not recommended since I do not have the proper knowledge or equipment to utilize it properly. Also notice that in phones that do not have an external power source have transformers in them and also do not have CID display because of low current. My knowledge, so please bring up yours if I'm wrong here.

The voltage that comes out of a phone outlet is DC (as opposed to AC which comes out of the wall). I noticed that even your meter is set to DC Volts. The purpose of a bridge rectified is to convert AC voltage to DC. You should be able to accomplish this with only an LM7812 voltage regulator to bring it down to 12 volts.
By Melissagirl 1194984086 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe morality of this is quite questionable, and you should have at least included a warning about the legality issues.

By I4ML33T 1192767499 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAll those ppl who say it's dangerous, i didn't know the phone company cheated u with such cheap wiring in ur house. I think it would be better if u all then get u line rewired if this hack really can start fires for u. Wankers.
Now all u monkeys just cover ur eyes, ears n mouths n live the intelligent ppl alone.
And made grammar errors. BTW Kip love the videos.... what we need is these whiners to use the IR Goggle hack and look into the sun. So any perceived offensive material from you won't offend their eyes.
By scorp76 1192766655 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewill you guys get off kip's balls. it seems like every video there is someone out there trying to figure out something wrong with his vids, or trying to knock them by leaving comments that are false. you are paying the damn phone company anyway. phone companies dont charge you for power. so unless you have solid proof, dont bring that mess here about it being illegal, or irresponsible, because i guarantee there is not one person under 18 that knows how to do half this stuff.
5 stars!
Wow, thats the most contrversy I've ever seen on a kipkay vid. Let 'en bitch all they want, you don't need to defend yourself kip. the quality of your vids speaks for itself. They're just jealous that they didn't come up with it. Now, what do you got to come up with some free heat this winter???
By ganzook 1192403567 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNo one is disputing the production quality of Kip's videos. The videos are well edited and are usually decent quality.
On the other hand, creating a video that advises people to perform dangerous and illegal modification is less than honorable. As several others have explained, this kind of project is illegal in most countries, despite Kip's intuition that you *might* evade detection. Furthermore, its dangerous since you're working with higher than normal voltages, even if it's current limited.
i think in emergency condition phone company can conserve some power if no any power supply....
By D3-7ermination 1192359899 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removekip:) why are u deleting my comments?
No problem ur vids are very cool.
No problem that first you show,Transmission lines of 15000 Volts but after you get into the 50 volt:)
you are cool dont worry, I am not negative just I said becareful.
now I not paid for the current ;) 5 stars
By marek080580 1192305969 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeif it is a fix line, they will detect you when you use internet connection with it. i use mauritius telecom, with the myt internet service, it when i use the trick my modem gets disconnected from there server and they come to check what happens but beware in other country it may be more dangerous than mine.

By mimom 1220192470 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei tried this one when a i was in high school...
you have just to convert the AC to DC by using rectifier diodes...
i used this one to power up three lamps along the hall way...
i just don't know if those were still working these days,i haven't visit that old house awhile...
good job anyway...
if u say this is illegal or that this doesnt work in your country u an idiot.. the phone line will always have power and its not illegal nor is it traceable.. for fcuks sake the power goes thru the line to power up the handset u bloody idiots!! u honestly thot phones dont use power??? u an idiot!!! they dude tell ur teacher to go fcuk himself if its a lady tell her to call me and i'll fcuk her if she's younger than 23
By radio_killa 1216497849 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeidiot how did u think ur phone was able to make a ringing sound did you think that was God's will?? the phone lines or cables carry energy that powers up ur handset which inturn causes the ringin even the mic to work.. the voltage is not string enough to power anything major probly jus a light or charge ur fone but nuffin major.. try connectin the power to a air conditioner... the pbx will blow up!!

I would try to install it, (for emergency use only), but I don´t really know what/where to buy thos things, I don´t even know waht to buy. Why don´t you pot on your web page step by stpe in all vids, or something like that.
P.D. I have a question, the only batteries "safe" to hack are the 9v and the 12v?
Thanks, please if someone ever answer this comment let me know.

Stop trying to persuade us to do illegal stuff.
Oh and i have something called a mobile phone which runs on batteries.!!!!
as long as you are paying for the phone service to the source.
But in theory its a cool little idea to run a light or something small
where can i get the four components?
please tell me
This really works! Thanks to this video I know charge my cellphone without using any electricity

By Johnnie Rambo 1200014024 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is like taking the gas out of the mail truck who delievers our mail. Also like our politicians who use our taxs for their own self servering desires. Do you also hire a plumber then use his FREE truck to pickup stuff while he is not looking? The truth is the phone company pays to produce the power and then passes the cost on to everyone. Thanks for adding costs.
FCC part 68 is where you find the legal stuff.
Maybe that kid who burned himself could use some help.
Ps when I find out how much power a phone line will carry the techinal details will follow.
IT is only free until you get caught.
His circuit has no fuses or other protection in it. If perchance this things shorts with 50 volts on it you could get a 50 amp surge through these elctronic devices. thats eoungh to start a fire. If you burn up part of your house and the fire deptment determines you have a home made device that caused it. not some UL listed device that has gone through TESTING then you are SCREWED! No insurance! But hey if you like the risk you might end up in the Darwin awards. We'll all get a laugh then!!!! HA hA ha ha ha
you dont know what u saying
u dont understant electrinics at all!! fool
The original voltage was 56.9vac but what is the the output voltage coming from the hobby box?
By wjerlinger 1198965423 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf you have FiOS (fiber optic) phone lines (verizon) the jack gets its power from an 8 hour battery that hooks up to your own power. So really you would then be paying for it.

By Diverz3d 1196957624 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCan't run very much off of the line though. Phone lines are too small to handle much current. I guess it works for an emergency light though. But then, so does a flashlight.
