cardboard can actually be really strong some have a compression strength of 450 pounds.

You might consider
putting a "cover" on all the chair, with cuts at the ends to replace the topmost and the foremost perpendicular pieces.

well...
it seems pretty strong except for one part. The bend where the back meets the seat looks like it could snap off. maybe make several of the side templates and put them in between to fix that. either that or just don't lean back :P
