Here's an easy way you can make your own teleprompter for less than $50.00! If you want to buy a teleprompter, be ready to spend between $3,500 and $20,000 or more! This video shows you step by step how to make one yourself! Teleprompters are used in front of a camera lense to reflect a moving script for an actor to read from. This DIY will take about two hours of build time. By Keith Hanshaw - hersheymaic2

  • What if...

...you don't have a laptop/computer to put inside..?

This requires having one which is far more than $50.

This is more like "build your own teleprompter CASE for less than $50"

    By Ripture 1192903881
    • Then you use

your computer and monitor and make the box fit your monitor! You obviously have some type of computer or you wouldn't be online!

    • People

Why do so many people gotta be so negative and technical. The video was clear. BTW Hershey I sell used monitors in my pawn shop for $5. So you still would be under $50.00

      By DJDavidHowell 1193197000
    • DJ...

      "negative and technical" ?

I was only pointing out that this post claims to teach how to make "your own teleprompter for less than $50.00!"

My contribution was that the $50 does not include the computer you need to run the teleprompter software, meaning this is more like a video on how to make your own teleprompter case, which would have been a more accurate post title and description.

It would be as if I made a video on "How to make your own laser cannon for $15!!" and I just described on building a cheap housing for some $10000 laser generator. It doesn't really count.

      By Ripture 1193222204
    • $2.99

Sorry i also own a $2.99 store. We have monitors there too.... if you got one there your total cost would be 49.99!

      By DJDavidHowell 1193210144
    • DJ again..

I just saw that you posted twice? It sounds like you meant to switch accounts and make it look like more people are commenting against me?

Again, you can buy a monitor fine. Good luck running teleprompter software without the other stuff a computer needs to, you know, actually run.

Why one can need to SHOOT teleprompter? I think it's to help announcer?

    By zloyshaman 1192879472
    • I didn't understand that Zloy!

      What did you mean??

      By hersheymagic2 1192918192
    • I meant that teleprompter, AFAIK, is needed to help announcer read text. So, announcer is reading text from teleprompter and camera is shooting announcer at this moment. But. Why do you need to shoot teleprompter itself?

      By zloyshaman 1192950225
    • The camera is shooting through the

teleprompter so the announcer is looking at the audience instead of off to the side.

      By hersheymagic2 1192983412
  • Cool Teleprompter

  • great hack!

Now all I need is my own news programme!

    By Sam Noyoun 1192877461
  • I have a better idea.

I think it might be a bit easier to just install the software, then put your laptop upright on a stand. Why do you need that frame and glass? And how does it cost only $47.00? How much does the laptop cost? No offense...just wondering...

    By Jstaryuk 1192988089
    • The purpose of the glass

is so the camera can shoot through the glass that the script is being projected on. That way, you are looking directly at the camera instead of looking off to the side or under the lens. When You're looking anywhere other than the camera, it's obvious and you can tell you're reading from something. This is how news and other live TV shows do it.

      By hersheymagic2 1192997474
    • But anyway, it's a good DIY project.

      By Jstaryuk 1192988194
    • Thanks

      Jstaryuk

      By hersheymagic2 1192997550
    • It's $47.00 for

the teleprompter. I assume if you can watch online videos you already have a laptop or computer!

      By hersheymagic2 1192997522
  • clever

You're really an innovative and creative man Keith...by the way, if you have Windows XP, you can also get Pinnacle Studio and use the Scrolling Titles to make a video of your teleprompter Script, if you do that, then all you need to do is open that File in Windows Media Player and Watch your monitor...

    By Jack Trades 1192985922
    • But if you

watch your monitor instead of looking directly at the reflected surface (that the camera is shooting through) it's obvious that you're not looking at the camera!

      By hersheymagic2 1192997625
  • Awesome.

Were you narrating using a teleprompter?

  • WTF

that vid was great why the hell does it have a 2.64 star ranking it should be in a lot higher, I gave it 5 stars. This has been happening alot on metacafe lately I don't know if its just haters or a glitch.

    P. S. I have the same laptop

    By ***Amazing*** 1193231589
  • Hey you have the same laptop as me

    cool

    By whittier 1193197365
  • I think there is someone that is messing

up the metacafe video ratings. Ive seem quite a few videos that obviously supposed to be rated above 40 and then end up as 2?

I saw a post on the forums from jeff3230 He said he had a good rating(cant remember it) but all of a sudden, when he had about 19,000 views, the rating dramatically dropped. Then he wasnt accepted in producer rewards because the rating was too low. Im becoming supicious that someone is finding a way to rate a video 1 star and count as more votes than 1 or some kind of hack!

Videos like this deserve at least 4-5 stars. But in this case, this video got a 5 from me If someone is messing with the ratings i hope metacafe catches him.

  • This video

assumes you already have a computer or laptop to use!

    By hersheymagic2 1192918163
  • On your video

Towards the end (about 1.34) the video camera in the video looks like the Canon XL-1/s/2. Could you tell me what tripod you've used and what all the additional equipment is on the camera. I have the XL-1s so would be keen to know.

Great cost saving idea for the teleprompter. Cool

    Thanks
    Steve

    • Canon XL2

I have a Canon XL2 with an Anton Bauer Battery Pack and a Digital Hard Drive on the back of the camera. The Tripod is a Manfrotto Tripod with a 503 fluid motion head and the VariZoom rocker hand control for the tripod. Thanks for watching!

      By hersheymagic2 1225480811
    • xl2

What made you get a digital hard drive and what model number is the tripod?
      Thanx again

      By ivsolutions 1225488146
    • Hard Drive / Tripod

With the hard drive, in addition to recording on the MiniDV tape, it also captures the footage in a digital format so you don't have to capture the footage on your computer. Take the hard drive, plug it into your computer and copy the files over for editing. You can capture about 4 hours on the hard drive I have.
The tripod base is a 351MVB2.

  • Great video ... quick question

    Thanks for this helpful video.

    Two quick questions:

    1. Is your glass 1/4" or 1/8"?

    2. How tall is the box your built? Does the height of the box impact the display at all?

Pardon my newbie questions ... thanks so much!

  • great green project

With the wood as a renewable resource. It may be heavy. How do you affix to the tripod? I have some projects like this on my channel made of wood for camera assist. Good video.

  • ?!!

What the hell?! How on earth did this video get such a low rating?! It looks like a genuine effort and a really good DIY... even though I may not need a teleprompter.

Something smells fishy... don't u think? It's a good thing Metacafe accepted it into the producer reward category despite the fact that it's got less than 3.

I'm giving it 5 stars for the effort!
