  • A Testimonial from Robert Schimmel

I first saw Daniel perform in November of 2003 at the Improv in Washington, DC. Daniel was the MC/opening act, a spot that he earned by winning an open mike competition, and although I didn't get to see everything he did, I was very impressed with his poise and his material, especially considering that he had only been doing comedy for less than two years at that point.

I was also quite impressed with Daniel's initiative. Daniel was very persistent without being overly pushy, and he asked me if it would be okay for him to perform with me at my shows in Honolulu in December. I said yes, providing that the show producers allowed, and Daniel was once again very much on the ball about contacting the Honolulu people and making sure that he did his due diligence.

At the shows in Honolulu, Daniel practically tore the roof off the place. I was able to watch his entire act and was extremely impressed that he was able t! o pull it off without one single swear word. Right then and there, I invited Daniel to go on the road with me in 2004. Part of the reason was that many comedians who open for me say to themselves, "I'm opening for Robert Schimmel, I can do all of my dirty jokes". I even had one comedian who did nothing but jokes stolen from one of my HBO specials! That's what it was particularly refreshing to work with them 100% clean comedian like Daniel, because obviously he was going to step on any of my material.

In the year that I worked with Daniel, I found him to be professional, humble and reliable at all times. Unlike other comedians, Daniel was never late for a show, and since he doesn't smoke, drink or do drugs, was always very easy to work with. He was extremely professional with all of the staff from all the clubs and also tipped the wait staff very generously. I also took him to many of my radio interviews and he was equally professional with all of t! he staff and was a riot on the interviews with his impressions! of Bill Clinton and other celebrities.

I was sorry to see Daniel go when he moved on to bigger and better things. It's amazing to see the things that he has done in his short career, and I know that it's just a matter of time before he becomes a national headliner.

    Best regards,
    Robert Schimmel

This is pretty good material and I like the fact that it is "clean." But Dan needs to watch his comedic timing--don't wait so long between lines (don't wait for the audience to stop laughing completely), otherwise it's hard to keep interest. Also, don't rely so much on stereotypes--use your creativity: you seem creative.
