  • Pinhole camera!

Ah! The good old pinhole camera! This is a nice project for those who are just beginning in the photography and want to learn more about how a camera works. You can actually take pictures with this! Google "pinhole camera" and you'll find all the physics behind it - how it works, and all! 5*****

    • hmmm

you could just buy a disposable film camera for a couple of dollars, or even an inexpensive 35mm camera, again for a few dollars. And if you want to learn about how cameras work then go Google it as suggested. This doesn't really teach you anything except how to use a lot of sticky tape, and the picture quality will be rubbish. If you want to make a pinhole camera it'd give better results to do it with a large format negative, and a bigger chamber I think.

    • But...

As I was taught a long time ago - the best way to understand something is to build it with your own hands. You can buy a nice DC motor in RadioShack for about $3. Yet in science and physics classes students build much simpler and largely useless for any practical purpose electric motors by using a magnet and some copper wires year after year. Why? Because they learn from it. Same here. One thing is to see it on a picture, another is to actually build it.

  • Nothing new here

this has been around for ages. There's a flickr group called matchbox pinhole with thousands of photos in it. Google for matchbox pinhole for the original intsructions. white tape is a bad idea it will let in loads of light, and that pinhole is too big

    By cliffordcapers 1194456233
    • But

It Still Works. And makes good pictures with 0.5 mm pinhole. You can make smaller pinhole if you want.
Yes, black tape would be better. But mine worked with white one.

It's a great idea. It was MY idea. The idea has been taken without permission or reference in order to make money for HasBash. Google for alspix matchbox pinhole, the original, not a rip-off.

You can see where HashBash took his ideas from, google for alspix matchbox pinhole. Shame no one asked permission to make money out of these ideas.

      By alspix 1194642437
    • No one

has to ask permission for a free idea.

  • Yes, real photographers still use this.

Actually, this is a great trick still used today, as many digital cameras are a pain for some projects. I've made these befor, as I do time-exposure, and digital cameras just can't compete with film. I'd put my money on a pinhole camera VS a digital for a 10 minute exposure anyday.

    By MJDick 1193397791
    • You haven't tried...

some of the new digitals then. I work with both film and digital and my Nikon D2X Digital SLR can do everything my Nikon F6 film SLR can do and more.

      By tonedeft 1193441032
    • Willing to try......

Willing to try anything, but have you tried a 10 to 15 minute exposure? I've tried the D2 already, a business partner tried to get me to go digital. The picture was so pixelated and he just looked at me and never has said anything about me using film since. Yes, I know I may be one of the few photographers left that still uses film, but ISA 25 or 33 on a calm night will bring colors, and digital has yet to master the time exposure. Feel free to see what I mean with my online portfolio MJDickPhoto.com How many cars do you see on the Hoover Dam, and how calm is the water in my pictures? I'll see if I can find a D2X and see what it will do though.

  • Just wondering...

How long do the subjects of the picture have to stay still for the picture to burn into the film? Like, 2 minutes or something?

  • Good learning experience

But pinhole cameras are SO SLOW that they are useless. For $7 you could have bought a throw-away with flash, but I applaud your craftsmanship.

    By )-(andyman 1193390753
    • Actually

I spent less then Us $7. All u need is to buy any beer or soda can and one film roll. The other empty film roll i found at home, so it was free :)
