Soon after the drug was approved by the FDA in 2010, the manufacturer admitted to reports of several dangerous side effects directly related to the drug including severe internal bleeding. In 2012 the Institute for Safe Medication Practices estimated that in 2011 there were more deaths associated with Pradaxa complications than with any other drug. With the large number of defective drug and Pradaxa wrongful death lawsuits being filed, there has been a motion to consolidate these lawsuits to enable victims and their families to receive compensation faster.
