What Is It Time For: a "Dance! Dance! Revolution!! ^_^
In the year 2000, my mother and father purchased an E-Machines computer which came with Win 98 SE and for whatever -- which my mother and father decided to purchase a Radio Shack $10 microphone with. It would be about one year [around 2001 or so] before I ever recorded a single sound into this microphone. The first song I recorded into the microphone was around 19 years old after having had a tricky circumstance come up with a friend of mine at the time which morphed into my very first "break up." It was partly over my young naivety, our family's differing religions and races, but today I do not claim to be the only person who was placed in a bind over what happened. Anyway--onto sampling!
Around the time that I recorded "Adam Adam Revolution" -- an operatic [if not simply comical] rendition of the song "ADAM" from G-Darius (which I had available on my myspace page in 2005) this rap freestyle phase hit me and I wound up rapping to the various renditions of this song which were on Bemanistyle. Also, I recorded some other songs which were based from original rhythms I had put together on the Roland Boss DR-5 Rhythm Section which my mother had purchased me for home use [I had discontinued working at the Computer Lab for as many hours around this time. Also began sampling in Music Maker!]
Also experimented rapping and singing aloud while driving my vehicle at the time to and from college.
For whatever reason, I was intrigued by some of the lyrics that came out of my mouth when rapping to Disconnected while driving in the car -- so I had decided that it would make a lot of sense--to write some thought out lyrics like I had typically done for my own original rhythms produced on the Boss DR-5.
I thought to myself that it would come out great, especially if I thought of "Inspector K" closer "mentors"
"Dr. Dre" and "Eminem" [my favorite duo at the time. Still think TONS about both amazing artists] and simply just put finger-to-keyboard (before 17 or so it had been strict pen-to-paper!) and jotted down the lyrics that I wanted to rap. Much thanks to my first DAW, Magix Music Maker 5--It was done.
And I Was Satisfied.
This was one of the very first times that I had taken a song that I had written down and recorded it. Prior to this, I used to often imagine the lyrics being said as I thought them while reading the writing -- or I would rap the lyrics without instrumentals at times or play music and rap to thin air.
This was one of the very first times that wrote a song with the intention of memorizing the lyrics and rapping them and it felt good. =) For a very long time, I did not want to be perceived as "stereotypical" simply because I am a North American with African descent. For quite some time -- especially after I got into creating dance beats and uptempo and downtempo electronic based music in DAWs like Cakewalk and the likes -- I was almost embarrassed of having the ability to rap well and sing well. Don't ask why.
I simply did. It was not until recently that I became intrigued by the idea that all could be merged. =)
Please feel free to enjoy this phase of my life from my teens! Hopefully it will inspire you! Enjoy! =D
Peace & Love! ^_~*
