Easy to make Never Needs Batteries !
5 centimeters is about 2 inches. Your wick looks a lot longer than that.
By rekkid 1193675011 Reply Spam [+7] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove...is longer than that! :-)
By I Love My Cats 1193720001 Reply Spam [+7] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemay be your wick is 6 or 7 cm , but the question is .... does burn ? :)
5 stars! cool light hunn!
By beepz 1197190292 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemaking all this fuss just cause the fabric is 4 cm instead of 5
gosh
How do you extend the wick when it burns down? Oil lamps have a wick key, but with this application you would have to douse the flame before the wick was too weak to pull, extend the wick, and relight... if you have limited resources (this *is* an emergency lamp, afterall) then it might not be possible to relight (i.e. if you can't make fire).
By RickyTheFish 1195299667 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou said that if you had limited resources you might not be able to put out the lamp and relight it. I'm assuming you mean like if you didn't have enough matches or something. Well you could use the lamp to light something small, like a toothpick or something, blow out the lamp, pull the wick, and then use the toothpick to relight the lamp. Just an idea in case anyone ever gets into that situation.
By rickhatman 1197230878 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMy husband has one of these, we made it together, it really gets screaming hot, so be careful. fyi...I pull my husbands wick with just my hand, even if it's too hot or the fire is blazing, it's not hard to do. why turn out the fire...the wick will become limp..you dont want a limp wick now do you...(j/k)

By Jlslapuz 1195418203 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou burn the wick a little before....i tried something like this long time ago, and found that if the wick already got burned a little, it makes the flame a lot stronger.

By exinco 1193925749 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove...there's nothing to prevent wind from blowing the flame around and a bottle is very easy to tip over. There's a reason that real oil lamps have glass globes and heavy bases!
By I Love My Cats 1193719967 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeits a emergency lamp lol

By jschin1085 1197521682 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou may call it "an emergency light that doesn't need batteries" but many people call it a "candle" and have used it for hundreds of years. And that was NOT 5 cm. Maybe even longer then 5 in.
By Coodude26 1197416774 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeif you put too much oil in it will explode :p
By bumscwoffler 1196893376 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis guy doesn't deserve to make cash off this, it was originally done privately by a guy who posted it on his website, then it was done by Make Magazine, and now this guy is making cash off of it, this is retarded. I made my own out of a Steel bushing and some cleanex.
By CA5A 1196639347 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethey used these in castles (well they used wine and such) long before computers were made. so make magazine and "the guy who posted it on his web page" are both none creditable. relax
