this is real, it is from a show called the real hustle from BBC3.they said that as long as you dont double the hight of the glass the rim will still be longer. (they was using a pint gass in a pub)

you let some of the string slip through your fingers so it appeared longer. if I measured the diameter and height of the glass in that video, and calculated the circumference, I don't think it would be that long.

if you watch his hands closely he moves the hand holding the mark to make it appear as if the top is bigger that the side of the cup, its a good trick but easily a fake.
