Elephant toothpaste is the name given to the catalyzed decomposition reaction of 30% hydrogen peroxide that uses soap to collect the oxgen gas that is produced. It is a favorite of most students at chemistry shows. Watch the video and see why.Music: Kevin MacLeod

  • One more note to dummies.

The proper word is inflammable frome the root word inflame. Also O2 is not inflammable, it is what does the "flamming". O2 supports the fire, if you have an atmosphere rich in oxygen rreaction will happen much faster. The atmosphere is approximately 20% O2, so in an atmosphere of 100% O2 reactions would be about 5 times as fast. Lesson is don't smoke under an oxygen tent.

  • Thanks!

I saw this experminet and youtube and for the life of me couldnt find out how to do it! 5*s and added to my favourites

  • cool!!!

how hot does the chem reaction make and if the bubbles are from O2 then could you set it on fire?

    By shex456 1194106096
    • Pathetic

You all arguing about chemistry without the knowledge of even high school level chemistry. Burning is rapid oxidation, the reaction of something with Oxygen. Combustion is rapid oxidation dealing specifically with hydrocarbons reacting with Oxygen forming CO2, H20 and releasing energy. O2 does not burn for the same reason that adding water to water does not make it more wet. If the foam consisted of a flammable substance, such as an Alcohol, the huge amount of surface area in contact with the pure Oxygen would burn very, very quickly.

    • no you are pathetic

first of all it took Honors International Baccalaureate Chemistry my freshman year in high school. So shouldn't i be obligated to something like this.

anyways my teacher always had somekind of way with every single chemical he had and devised ways to kill you with them.

    • O2 Not Flammable

O2 (Oxygen) is not flammable; if it was, then the earth's entire atmosphere would ignite when you lite a match. O2 is required for other things to burn ( a candle wouldn't burn without O2) however, O2 itself will not burn.

      By thecrisp 1194094228
    • o2 is not flammable

in some instances such as pure o2 it will burn with a chemical reaction like this it o2 is not burning it is actually being realeased by the reaction. just how H gas is released when you put calcium in water

    • As a matter of fact...

Oxygen happens to be very flammable; it is one of the cleanest burning elements. It usual burns with a transparent flame. The reason the atmosphere doesn't instantaneously ignite every time there is a match lit, is because oxygen in the atmosphere is diluted by all the other gasses in the air (i.e. nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, etc.)

      By Llamarama 1204665983
    • accually...

oxygen is only twenty percent of the earths atmosphere the rest is nitrogen .............. for any mixture to combust the flamable substance, in relation to the whole mixture, must be atleast 70% greater than the other substance ....... for a two substance mix

      By snig77 1199527010
    • IT ACTUALLY IS

O2 is actually flammable. The air we breah isnt pure O2. So that is why it doesnt blow up when we light a match

      By ansmitty 1194144898
    • Not true

Pure Oxygen (O2) cannot be ignited; it only makes other things burn faster. Burning occurs when a substance combines with O2. A flammable substance will burn much quicker and hotter if it is exposed to pure O2 rather than air (which is 20% O2).

Have you ever used an Oxy/Acetelene welder? It has two tanks, 1 O2

      By thecrisp 1194186008
    • Oxygen

In other words, oxygen SUPPORTS combustion, but isn't flammable itself.

    • i think

Its so airy i think the bubbles would just die away at the presence of heat instead of ignighting.

I will tell this to my friends and I will do it via 1800 mumdad

  • foam

what is the consistancy of that foam when dried? Or is it like ruber, or does it just shrink,If u dont mind how about trying to find out how to make a mix for a styrofoam type of foam. i read somewhere that it can be made from corn starch but i dont remember what all was mixed with it,or how it was done. thanks

  • i can not belive you are all so stupid

why dont we just do the reaction and then try and set it alight
