    "The collapse of a bridge over the track happened at the Nova Lisboa (currently named Huambo) street circuit in Angola, before the start of the sportscar race "6 Horas Internacionais", August 1972.
    Too many spectators had gathered on the bridge to witness the start of the race, their weight was too much for the rickety structure and it collapsed.
    The pace car was running at the front of the field, as the cars were about to be given the green flag from the rolling start, approaching the spectator bridge near the start/finish line of the circuit. The bridge suddenly collapsed at the front of the pace car, and crashed down onto the circuit and all the drivers had to come to a grinding halt. None of the drivers got hurt, but six people were killed in the accident, those spectators who were on the bridge itself.

    According to another source, some people claim it was a terrorist plan to loosen up the bridge and to collapse it during the race, this has not yet been clarified.
    The accident caused the immediate stop of the event. Probably if the cars had been given the green flag, it could have been an even more serious catastrophe."

      Hi!
      It happened in 1974, one year before Angola's independence.
      It was caused by overcharge of spectators standing.
      At the time, there were at least 7 circuits, 2 permanent, Luanda and Benguela.

      Well done to madhatter for getting the facts straight. In response to my earlier comment I apologise I was wrong to suggest that it was silly to suggest that Angola might have had a motorsport circuit. It seems this is quite correct - it just seemed a very unlikely place for a track, given the country's overwhelming poverty and internal problems.

    Are you sure that is what the problem here is. I would have see more of this incident to knwo for sure, or even to have a decent opinoin that terrorists were responsible for this. also it the footage looke to be fairly old (not in reference to the black and white), the vehicles look more from the 70's (late) era. Is this possibly in Spain with the home grown terrorists there. That is the Bosco sect (simimlar to the IRA). If this is the action of terrorists, then I would say it is from then from the Islam terrorists.

    On the other hand, I seem to think it is more faulty construction of the bridge/overpass than what it is a planned attack.

      Marido, shame on you - if it is terrorism it must be Islamic terrorists? What a stupid thing to say. I'm not saying that a lot of terrorism is not down to Muslims, but to conclude that if it is in fact terrorism it must be down to Muslims is just plain stupid!

      To suggest this clip is shot in Angola (and here Marido is not to blame) is also, frankly, stupid. Angola is one of the world's poorest nations, has been torn apart by civil war for the last three decades, and is not known for its motorsport!

      Can I suggest that there are simply too many people on this bridge and it has collapsed? If I were a terrorist, which I'm not I hasten to add, I can think of better things to do than bring down a rather small bridge in very unspectacular fashion!

      This clip is rubbish, the title is just plain daft, and it's collecting some stupid commentary!

      I had not said that this was due to terrorists, but just said if it WAS then it would probably be more likely fromt he Bosco sect... they are in the similar fashion as what the IRA is. But I went on to explain that it was more due to faulty construction. There by laying aside the posibilty of an actual terrorist act. However, as you just advised, there does seem to be too many people occupaying the structure in the first place.
      Now for the reson I thought it could be Spain, and the time period. One the age of vehicles, two the country side (what little one can see). I must apologise if I had not made myself clear as to whom this accused terroism was from. Unfortunatly you read my statement as it being in direct result from the Islamic side. This was not my intent. Congrats to you for keeping me well intun with my writing.

    Look at that, my capture and all, I`m almost honored :)

    Except when I see who`s commenting the clip... Makes me want to cry.... alot...

    However, the cause of the accident isnt excactly clare, some say it was terrorists some say it was to crowded.. The reason people was suspecting the sabotage is quite obviously because of the time the bridge collapses, right infront of the drivers... my opinion is that the bridge was way to crowded , and it lead to a to yet another tragic episode in the history of motorsport ...

    If they hadn't made such a fuss over portugal's domination they would now be a rich country, civil war at the colonies killed many portuguese soldiers, and after becoming independent they borrowed a few million dollars from portugal and, as they can' pay, their debt was forggiven.
