A friend of mine drives the ROV's (remotely opperated vehicles) in the oil industry. They are basically an underwater video camera. Whilst filming a well head this chap turned up. The depth buy the way in the top right of the screen is in Meters! 2950 meters for an air breathing mamal?

  • Great clip!

Whales are notorious for diving to extreme depths. It is not clear why they do this, but the scientific community has been aware of this for years. One theory I heard is that the extreme pressure may assist them in controlling parasites and possibly other illness they are prone to. My personal theory is that they are so F**king big, they can go anywhere in the ocean that they want to. Actually, they really hunt for giant squid at these depths (and crill).

    • Sperm Whale

This is a sperm whale, which is well known to be able to dive to 2500 meters or deeper, where the pressure equals 48 atmospheres! The sperm whale accomplishes this feat by hold its breath for over an hour and is able to repeat the dive again after a quick breath on the surface.

      By elquemataranas 1143053448
    • Also,

they can hold their breath for about an hour, which makes how far down they go all the more impressive.

    By ytch_yatch 1186034035
  • meters?

id say more likely feet which is still pretty damn deep

    By coolie ninja boy 1156737861
  • Careful observance says otherwise-

If you look quite closely what you can see is actually a porpoise not a whale. It is too big to be a whale.

  • Wow!

2950M. . . that is really deep, you could almost call it 10,000 feet under the see. that's close to two miles below. wow. guess he didn't need to breathe this year.

  • New World Record??

According to Guinness, the world record for a deep diving mammal is 2000 meters or 6500 feet, off the coast of Dominica. If the display is correct, in meters, this animal clearly breaks the record with 2950 meters! Thats 9678 feet!! 1.8 MILES DEEP! Congratulations to your friend!

  • Good

clip. Only wish we could've seen more of the whale. Guess it's not much of an actor. For a change most of the comments were interesting.

  • Japan

This is an impressive piece of footage - very lucky for this whale to turn up!

The horror is that countries like Japan still feel the need to slaughter these animals in the name of science. It was recently revealed that in Japan, excess whale meat was sold for pet food - that's right, some of the planets most intelligent and majestic mammals being turned into cat and dog food.

I'm not sure which is worse though - turning them into burgers for moronic Japanese, or into cans of fodder for their pets.

I hope people will share my dim view of Japan as a supposedly civilised and developed nation - if you're left in any doubt then view pretty much any clip on Metacafe from Japan to gain an insight into their 'culture'.

The events of August 6th and 9th 1945 should have represented a turning point for the Japanese, but I don't see the evidence anywhere. Pathetic bastards!

    • I don't like Japan.

But I don't agree with you on this issue. Do you eat pork? Pigs are also intelligent, and very arguablly very similar to we human being. How could you eat them simply for food?

      By TigerKick 1142991186
    • Pigs are very similar to humans?

First point to be made is that I don't eat pigs, or any other animals, including whales. I'm vegetarian.

Pigs are fairly intelligent - but there is no comparison between pigs and whales. Pigs are very numerous, and take a very short time to reach maturity, and are relatively short lived. Many species of whale are very endangered, many take a very very long time to reach maturity and also live a very long time - the death of a whale is of much more concern to the planet's biodiversity than the death of a pig.

Finally, where do you get this nonsense that pigs are very similar to humans? Both are species of mammal, and there the similarity ends. It's not even worth taking this rebuttal further.

Don't even presume to argue with me on this point unless you also have a PhD in zoology.

      By Kittyman 1143062107
    • Pigs similar to humans??

Indeed they are, what rock have you been under??......Pig heart has blood flow similar to humans and has been studied closely for this reason.
Stem cell research has shown human stem cells can grow in a pig.
Pigs also rate fourth on the intelligence list... humans, primates, dolphins/whales then PIGS.
If you think pigs are filthy animals, think again. They are only products of their enviroment, if given a choice they will remain clean and go to the same area to relieve themselves spacing it out so they do not walk in it again.
As far as wallowing in mud, yes when hot they will cool off by covering themselves with mud, evaporation has a very cooling effect.

      By Joe Cool 1143927118
    • Correction

Actually primates rank behind Elephants in intelligence. The second most inteligent animal is the dolphin followed by whales then elephants. sometimes I wonder if dolphins had aposable thumbs if they would rank ahead of us humans in intelligence.

    • you my friend need to shut up

once in a while. You are a pompous idiot, probably not a zoologist and even if your where what would give you any specific knowledge of aquatic mammals.
You are a punk and a show off.

    • Hey! Be nice!

Sure, there are bad things about Japan, and it has its share of perverts, but so does every other country on the globe! And you can't judge an entire country just by the clips you find on metacafe.

      By Cray zeke rap 1142985905
    • i agree

points at both sides are correct japan coulture has alot of animal cruelty in it, but not all of it i love japanese coulture their martial arts, their honor and incradible bravery in history, u really shouldn't judge an intire country from a few bad things we all know every country has them, i'm an athesit but i do recall the bible saying don't jugde less you be judged yourself or something (i'm israely so i know what i'm talking about ;)) anyway my two cents hope noone start calling me a stupid jew :P
