Make these in school chemistry. We had a contest to make the biggest one, and I had made a giant crystal that weighed over a pound. Then someone took my crystal and put it in a jar of water and it melted to half size before I found it. :(

As a couple of people have pointed out - this is NOT BORAX.
Borax is white. This is blue. And it's OBVIOUSLY copper sulfate pentahydrate.
(Believe me, I know -- I have some in my lab at the moment. You can make it with a copper dish scrubber, some sulfuric acid (aquarium "pH reducer"), and a bit of sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate.)
Or just look for "root killer" at the local hardware store (unless you're in the San Francisco bay area, in which case you won't find it -- it's banned in the 7 counties around the bay).

"Thirty grams of copper sulfate is potentially lethal in humans" (wikipedia: Copper).

It was in the laundry section, in this section called fabric softeners. It is in a box that is yellow and green. It says 20 MULE TEAM BORAX in very big letters. Well, I hope this helped!

It's just to help get the crystal growth started. The large crystal shown grows on the string as the borax collects on the original crystal on the string.

you can buy borax from walmart in the laundry section it's called 20 mule team and in a yellow box i think. It's around 2 or 3 dollars a box. Pool stores also carry this as it's used to raise the PH of water to balance your water in your pool. Although at the pool store it's called PH and runs about 18 dollars.

The crystal is hard, it's look like areal crystal.
You can always touch the string & watch the progres.
Ask for Copper Sulphate in any gardener shop.
borax and copper sulphate are two different things. Copper sulphate is a blue herbicide and borax is a white detergent very similar to baking soda. Both grow crystals however borax will need food coloring if you want it blue.
