      we know EXACTLY what we are doing to ourselves. And we also know that this video shows nothing. There are way too many faults in this expirement.
      1. NOBODY inhales 100% of a cigarette
      2. Lungs are regenerative tissue that repair
      3. Smokers exhale when they smoke. They do not retain all of the tar.
      4. Smokers do not inhale nearly as hard as that vaccuum was sucking

      I am sure there are more. Ask a scientist and a biologist. Sure, they will tell you that smoking is bad. We all know that. But, they will also tell you that this experiment is purely entertainment with no education.

      ...because:

      1. over long time you shurely will inhale more than the smoke of 400 cigarettes
      2. lungs repair themselves, shure, but to reach the maximum repair level, they need average about ten years, lots of time for the poisons to destroy and alter your cells. now you have thousands of cells in your lungs, just calculate how high the risk is that some of these cells mutate to cancer cells over this long time...
      3. + 4. thats the same thing like your first argument, over long time you shurely will collect more amounts tar and poisons in your lungs than those who are shown in this experiment,

      all in all this experiment is a good example what will happen to your lungs over long time, and i'm shure all these clever guys who try to find mistakes in this experiment only don't want to realize that smoking causes big, irreparable damage to thier whole body.

      so, in this spirit, have a nice cigarette, and while you smoke it, think about in which local hospital they have the best cancer surgery ;D

      Just checked. You are right in that they do not "regenerate." But they do repair overtime. They never get back to 100% but they do get better by cleaning themselves out.

      And how hard you inhale definatly does matter. If you inhale slowly and soft then more of the carcinogins will be left in the filter of the cigarette, and will enter your lungs at a cooler temperature. Inhaling faster and harder will cause hotter and more polluted smoke to enter your lungs.

    Great video. Thanks. I used to smoke, years ago, when I was in medical school. Then I watched an autopsy of a man who had died from lung cancer. The inside of his lungs had thick, black "goo" that looked just like the black tar you had at the end of your demonstration. That was enough to convince me! I quit!. Also, I had a friend who was a chemical engineer. He told me that some spy agencies were trying to find "super, toxic, fast poisons" to use on darts, pins, etc. during the Cold War in the 50s & 60s. He said one of the top choices was pure Nicotine! He said one drop would kill in 3 seconds. Yet, cigarettes are still legal!

      The 'black goo' was from the cancer itself. Diseased organs, cancer especially, will turn that way. If you see an autopsy of, say, pancreatic cancer, then you will see the same thing. If the goo was 'tar' from cigarettes then the smoker would never have time to get cancer - asphyxiation would occur long, long before. Nicotine is a poison, yes, so is caffeine. There's two things to remember: 1) the poison is the dose 2) There is no 'nicotine' in cigarettes, but nicotine OXIDES, like niacin (vitamin b3, check your cereal box and you'll probably see it). Hence products like Nicorette not killing people who use it

  • Rather dangerous demonstration

    I would strongly suggest that you wear rubber gloves when handling that material. As you point out, it is very toxic. Just getting it on your skin is dangerous.

    But it is a good demonstration of what smokers are putting into their lungs. I did a similar experiment when I was in Junior High school some 35 years ago. The extract is very nasty.

    And..it's not tar that is a poison, but Carbon Monoxide. Tar just consumes lung's free space for air, and creates a "friendly" environment for cancer to grow.

    Just use unfiltered cigarettes and you can get the same effect with only a half of a cigarette. Don't say that it's not true because it is, my grampy showed me the inside of his mouth after puffing on an unfiltered cigarette once and it looked like the inside of that pot! And if you try it yourself, you have to use real cigarettes made in the 1800's when they used to put used tires and cocaine in cigarettes. Oh and child molesters, cigarettes are bad!!!!!!!!

      24(cigs a week) x 52(weeks in a year) = 1248

      That only 1248 cigarettes in a year, but it still sick, and dangerous. I will never smoke, ever. It's disgusting, toxic, stinks, and just plain nasty. I'd never date a girl who smoked either. Yuk.

  • Great demonstration video, but

    it actually under-estimates the amount of tar in the cigarettes. The short residence time and the large bubble size does not allow all the tar to be extracted from the smoke and into the water. So what you show is actually on the low end of what ends up in your lungs!

      Coffee vapor (i.e. the smell of coffee) has over 800 carcinogenic chemicals in it. In addition, the tar that remains from smoking cannabis is much more easily removed by the body than tar from cigarettes.

    I know smoking is bad and that there are many poisonous chemicals in them. I know it can kill as well as potentially lead to stroke. I merely could give a rat's ass as if I'm going to die someday anyway, I'd prefer not to die as an old and senile geezer, thank you very much. Sure, smoking might be harmful to me, but quitting is most definitely posing a risk to everyone else.

    few yars ago what the doctors was draining from the lounges of one of my best friend's father . What you are showing here are flowers and perfume ...The guy dyed 6 months later , after he starts smoking again.. I always liked the simlicity and effective results of the japanese work.     any ine that can read knows that cigarettes are bad for but it is a choice people make in thier lives. some people can go thier whole life without problems others get sick from it. but i do agree they are not healthy for anyone, however i have smoked for 25 years and enjoy it quite alot. i dont think kids should smoke but once they are old enough to that is thier choice in doing so. cigarrete with filters have alot more chemicals than non filter natural tobacco. the companies put the chemicals in thier to addict people to them, but it also gives an undesired effect the have a taste that some dont like. but ur vid was fun to watch
