Guys, I can't believe some of the stuff you've been writing. First of all, to comment and speculate about all the people he may or may not have beaten up is silly. I'm a firm believer that when it comes to those things, only first-hand accounts can be believed, not something you may have read on the internet or god knows what else.

Also, to say that there are better martial artists or fighters (you like to reference the UFC a lot), is silly for two reasons. 1) It's pretty damn hard to compare someone that is dead to people living, it's like speculating how good of a hitter Babe Ruth would be in baseball today, especially since I highly doubt any of you ever happened to see Bruce Lee in person. 2) I find your comments saying how he would get destroyed by any UFC fighter interesting. While I'm sure there are people out there that can punch harder than him or are better grapplers, the pure speed and unreal power and precision behind his kicks would overmatch anyone's brute strength.
I'm not saying he would be unbeatable, to make that assumption about anyone is ridiculous. But I think you would be hard pressed to find anybody these days that could do it.

Lee had special equipment built for him that helped hone his reflexes - including a sensor system that had a light beam between where you stood and a punching pad. Your fist would break the beam so the speed of your hand could be recorded on a readout. He was using these things while he was teaching and before he started making movies.
Basically the guy devoted his life to the martial arts. John Saxon noted that Lee was always training in off-screen time during filming of Enter the Dragon, preparing "for a fight that would never come" (though he was certainly challenged enough by punks who wanted to make a name for themselves).
The discipline required to do that 24/7 is amazing. He didn't train it, he lived it - physical, mental, philosophical.

There were alot of great martial artists back then..Not so many showing off for the cinema...Jet Li started training at the age of 3 and touring the world giving exibitions by the age of 10...Jackie Chan grew up in the Chinese opera..Which is as hard a training as you can imagine for martial arts...Take Bruce Lee's one inch punch,he was not the only one known for that,go back more years than Lee's fame and take a look at a boxer named Rocky Marciano who could knock a big man down the same way.....Some times I really think people need to read more than watch movies...Anyone can be a God in a movie...It is real life that shows the true greats...

First off, I respect any martial artist of proper spirit and mind, no matter what their skill level. Secondly, I don't necessarily think I'm disrespecting anyone by saying it would be hard to find people better than Bruce Lee. The man was phenomenal and he dedicated his life training and trying to bring martial arts to the mainstream (hence all his movies, books, so on and so forth). Saying someone is second best to Bruce Lee would be like winning second in a beauty contest to Monica Bellucci (or whoever you want to put in there). To even be mentioned in the same league as him I feel is a great compliment.

You're right though, I did kind of feed into my own criticism by comparing him to current fighters, right after I said it is silly to do so. So I say we just all agree that Bruce Lee was an amazing martial artist and an amazing person, and that we can continue to learn from what he and other great martial artists, past and present, can teach us.

I completely agree with you, but I wont say that bruce lee was supernatural in martial arts,the reason why he became so unique and famous in martial arts is because he put all his energy from child hood into martial arts and in perfecting not only his fighting skills but also his mind. in my opinion i dont think anybody yet has been as good of a martial artist, not "fighter", than he has been.

All styles have their weaknesses, therefore there is no perfect style. He says he has no style b/c he has no particular style. In years of fighting technique research he did develop his own style though, Jeet Kun Do. Its his own resolution to all styles.

Good stuff from the guy below, I agree with alot of what is said. Bruce lee was an innovator and paved the way for everyone who was to follow. He not only contributed to the martial arts in terms of creating new styles and methodologies, but gathered enough exposure over his career to almost single handedly stimulate western interest in the genre. There will be better fighters than Bruce Lee, that is evolution but he was not just a fighter, he was and is an icon and should be revered as such.
ps My father did know him back in Hong Kong (Peninusula night club) in the early 70s.. Apparently if you were to put your palms two inches apart facing each other and open, Bruce, at an arms stretch away would be able to always get his hand between them before you could get them to meet. Every time. Not exactly indicitive of how well he could fight, but reflexes like that are something else,,,,,

basically Bruce was combining the best moves from like over 26 styles such as judo, gung fu, wrestling, boxing, etc. plus street fighting such as hits to groin and even biting. It was to be a study of the perfect self defence. Bruce said "belts are to hold up pants". Go get a copy of a jeet kune do book that has pics drawn by bruce in a hospital bed, so much knowledge we have lost because of bruce's death.

No one can consider the UFC a actual fight. Those who study know this to be true as there are alot of limitations in the UFC not to mention 4oz padded gloves. Many places cant not be attacked as they are illegal. Martial arts is not about beating anyone but yourself. You are your only enemy in this lifestyle. With power comes wisdom. If you only fight to survive you shall never accept defeat. UFC fighters have to much to think about. Bruce Lee knew had been training wing chun for most of his life amoung other things. He knew sticky hands well and how to trap very well. His philosiphy is that of many martial artist in the world. There is no one ultimate style or person. All have their weak points. The key is to learn all the moves and all the counters to everything.

Bruce Lee was a man that trained constantly, you cannot begin to theorise his skill from a film, clip, book or heresay...
A UFC fighter of today, even the best, are FIXED fighters...
Bruce was unbound by all and yet had all, he was fast yet strong as a rock...
There will likely never be another fighter like him unless they train themselves LIKE Bruce did, and to be honest it was his technique, a UFC fighter does not have that, i watch UFC and practice JKD, and have done for 6 years, jkd that is, and no UFC fighter could match his skill, he would easily defeat them.

The guy was amazing, a true fighter, athelete, artist, and a philosopher. Bruce lee is a person that we can use as a role model , one who never let go of his dream, he accomplished everything there is to accomplish in life in just 33 years. His JKD skill was best of class, although now there are plenty of fighters that have learned multiple techniques, it's very hard to find someone who actually developed his own style as in Bruce's JKD. His free style is what stood up. Bruce lee once said 'I could beat any man in the world' his confidence was unmatched, he had trust in his skill. No one was as obsessed in his passion as Bruce was, he lived it every day and practiced it every day that made him who he is.
He might not be the biggest guy out there, he is however very fierce and his moves are masterful, with Bruce, anyone to get in the ring with him will have to at least be just as fast if half as skilled, and that is not an easy thing to do.
Chuck norris had admitted many times that he could not beat Bruce Lee, although Chuck's roundhouse was powerful, it was timed by a calendar, Bruce would go have coffee, come back and the roundhouse is still going...
read his books, you can apply it to anything, to your job, to your favorite sport, to anything and it will give you a mental edge over someone who hasn't read it.

If you read any respectable 'complete' biography of Bruce Lee he had fought several one on one fights.
If you are known as the best martial artist, how long will it take for someone to question and challenge that.

I am just going to assume people backing UFC really weren't around when bruce lee was the man. UFC is awesome, and I do agree its hard to really compare a dead guy to a someone alive, but its Bruce Lee. In his case you can actually look at things hypothetically because he was exceptional. He had the moves figured out, but what he perfected was the ability to utilize his fool strength.

He did fight many people in real fight, just there isn't many videos of that. when he was studying in U of Washington, he participated in boxing contests, and he won, and since he is pretty cocky at school, some students always messed with him, and he kicked their asses. After he went back to Hong Kong, there was once he beat up 9 gangsters. And after he got famous, some karate champion and Thai boxing champion wanted to challenge him, and Bruce Lee did fight them underground, you can try ask some old masters in Hong Kong, they probably did attend the underground fights, and they will tell u the truth. Bruce Lee knocked down his opponents in couple mins.
