Passive Solar Heaters not only save you money, but are very eco-friendly. Learn how to make your own for less than $10!
... same with or without the device but that doesn't mean it won't work (as someone stated here). The only thing this device does is transfer the radiation energy to warm the air instead of all the other objects in the room that have a much lower conductivity and therefore are much less effective warming the air in it.
The principle of conservation of energy applies here and still this device will probably work wonders!!! There’s a catch though; when the sun is gone the room will probably be a little colder because all the objects in the room now have less heat to transfer slowly over the periods when there’s no sun anymore.
that will only give you hot air in the summer and cold air in the winter
By stop sign 1213835601 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDon't use directly below vinyl blinds. For obvious reasons to some.... for other "because it melts them and causes them to slowly warp".
Not that I learned this from experience or anything... heh heh
much do the coins cost?

By yallways 1198269163 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveRadiation that passed glass of window already is in your room. It doesnt matter if it meet on its way black painted coins, carpet or sleeping cat. There are only two ways of increasing temperature inside the room and both are "outside": insulation and pumping-in energy. That video is obviously "joke", but dont worry if you was tricked- you will lern phisic. Some day...
PS Naturaly you can burn furniture too.
Infrared light from the Sun only accounts for 49% of the heating of the Earth, the rest being caused by visible light that is absorbed then re-radiated at longer wavelengths. Radiation can propagate through a vacuum. But if visible light is reflected (not absorbed) then it can not re-radiated the additional light. His mechanism allows the visible light to be absorbed and re-radiated to the room rapidly. = free heat
By hiltz006 1196285892 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI just love people who don't try something first before commenting on why it doesn't work. Is an outside passive system better? Yes, but they cost about a thousand to build and install. This uses the exact same principles and heats the exact same air in the exact same way. Here's a simple experiment for you to try. Color a penny or other coin black, place it next to an identical coin that isn't colored in the same sunlight in the same room and tell me which one get's hotter. By your reasoning this will not work!!! OMG!
By babblin5 1195262767 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWill this also work using aluminum sanded and sprayed black. Aluminum is also very heat conductive and responsive to temperature...
By stitch10925 1200094949 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removesome day you will learn how to spell.

Hello, mister scientist. Do you know that different surfaces absorb electromagnetic radiation differently?
By zloyshaman 1195253893 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYeah, but maybe some day you'll learn grammar and spelling. And your credibility will rise, just like the temperature in that little box he created. :-p

By 1stjabber 1195400247 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveStreniksen is 100% correct... this device is precluded from working by very fundamental thermodynamics principles...
By tomz17 1195405057 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDo you have any tricks to cool a hot room? :)
By fishin4daze 1195083126 Reply Spam [+8] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCurtains block the sun, and reflect the heat back outside. Use brighter colors, get a cooler outcome. That or use your blinds. Quite powerful.
Another thing people could do is replace your single pane windows with two and I'd actually recommend three pane windows. Three paned windows give you two pockets of air between you and the environment, it's far more efficient for heating and cooling purposes.
Something my father always does is to rotate your air. For example, if you have a two bedroom house, have the vents leading your heat/cooling to the first floor during the day, and the second floor during the night. Believe it or not, this actually saved quite a bit.
a room at night. Just point it to an empty space in the sky and it will radiate heat towards it. Deep space is very cold (it doesn't emit thermic radiation, it absorbs it).
Other option is to rebuild your room and/or house with an structure similar to termites colonies. Their high structures and multiple air flows promote quicker hot air dissipation. Maybe a similar effect can be used using pipes to direct warm air?
Not yet...lol

By tycoyoken 1195095042 Reply Spam [+6] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe law of conservation of energy will prevent this from working efficiently. See my detailed post somewhere below.
By vital-is 1195742000 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe law of conservation of energy will make this device very inefficient or pretty much prevent this from working.
If the energy in the form of light (including infrared) has entered the room and if it is absorbed by the window sill, carpet, etc, it is in the room already and it will heat these objects.
Some of the light may be reflected outside if the surfaces the sunlight hits do not absorb light very well. To prevent this you can take a black cloth, paper anything black and place it where it will absorb the direct sunlight. You can also try painting your window sill black.
do these only work when the sun is out? can you make them more efficient by making multiple stacked rows of pennies?
By MattWithCharisma 1195373265 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe greater the thermal mass, the better the radiation of heat. Theoretically, with a large enough mass, you can collect enough heat to continue warming the air after the sun is no longer shining. This will work on light overcast days, but not nearly as efficiently.
By babblin5 1195378120 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveJames Dulley is a mechanical engineer with a syndicated column in over 400 newspapers. You can read all about his window solar room heater, which my design incorporates many of the same concepts, albeit in a simpler manner, at his website. In my design, I use the non-glazed glass of my window for the extra insulation rather than the double plexiglass design he uses.
By babblin5 1195467630 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removepowder coat the glass with TiO2. the heat will become purify before entering the room.

By babblin5 1195144518 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDo you really need the plexaglass in front if you place the unit up against the clear glass window?
Good idea, wish there was better use for pennies...
But a sheet of plastic, even like the drop cloth I used, is recommended as an insulating layer. Glass conducts heat (and cold) so most of your generated heat will be used to warm the window glass instead of going into the air. That's why many Window Insulating kits contain thin plastic and double sided tape, yet work very well.

By willtx 1195163740 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewill you generate more heat? Not trying to be funny...
By jdennis218 1195147429 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat is not a silly question at all. The ideal would be a sheet of copper as the backing, which would not only heat the air, but give you radiant heat as well, just like a cast iron stove. More pennies will definitely work, but I would suggest a wood back for them. They get REALLY hot. I just put a thermometer on one and it read 130 degrees F!
By babblin5 1195152538 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe heating frenzy! I'm gonna make 10 of those. You said 8,000 BTU's so that would be 80,000 BTU's! Awesome!

put something in the sun that is black and something that is white....what got hotter??
ya the black thing did
copper is a great way to disperse heat
have a high end computer??? if ya want it to run cooler get a heatsink with copper wire or transfers, it helps to move the heat faster.
nice vid ill have to use some
You've seriously got the best ideas. I don't think it'll be that effective here in London though coz we don't get much sunlight. I'm gonna try it anyway. Just one question. It is probably a problem with my ears but I didn't quite catch what you said was used as the backing that was later painted black. Sorry...:D

stick all your gold on the window and paint it black.. u can see none of em on d next day.la la la la....
By hiro_nakamura 1197354423 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI even made on with a cookie sheet paintedflat black and a large plastic bin that was about 12 inches deep, cut slits in the top and bottom, then put Saran Wrap over the front. Worked just fine, although not as efficiently.
By babblin5 1196404728 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeis simple and great, i would be sure to use old (pre 1960) pennies because they are solid copper.

Hey
I LIKES it!
Im gonna make one tommorow for my garage, I have 2 large windows in the workshop, and although they point kind of East/South I can see that is something that could really help. Thanks
I don't try to present myself as a scientist, or that I know everything. All I can say is that I research what I do as thoroughly as I can, and give it a shot. There's a great quote from Arthur C. Clarke that goes like this: When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
Common guys don't you like hacks that will save you money? I do and looking forward for BABBLIN5's next video that will save us even more!
By dimigoa 1195392332 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI've started construction and need some help . Is the larger vent for the top or the bottom? Also, I'm guessing that the panels are about 5-6 inches wide.
By whitehea 1195339573 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou will want the larger vent at the top. I actually increased the smaller vent at the bottom by about twice the original as that performed better. Then side panels are set at a 65 degree angle, which makes the front width about 24 inches. As a side note, I even found an old solar-powered fan that was originally intended to ventilate your car in the summer and placed that at the top vent to make it a forced air heater =)
By babblin5 1195378555 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe solar heater was so simple to make. The pennies get hot quickly, exactly as advertised. Thanks for the free heat.

the gas companies are gonna be pissed, lol. thnx for the info. great work ;)
By iceman_bergkamp 1204351954 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removenow add a small fan at the bottom so it can circulate easier
By cherwa 1203053116 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI actually used a fan that was scavenged from a junk air hockey table for a day or two, then I tossed it out. Doesn't make sense to use electricity when the point is free heat. I need a solar fan.
Babblin is right though, this will collect a lot of heat. Enough so that the pennies get HOT. I used plexiglas for the whole thing. A word to the wise, if you use plexiglas, use a circle cutter bit or doorknob hole cutter for the vents. Jigsaw splinters.
I buillt this and get a output temp of about 120 F (65F indoors and 15F Outdoors) which is respectable.
The only problem is that there is negligible airflow. I thought it would be a self sustaining wind tunnel , although very mild obviously.
If I could circulate air through there it would be great, but as it is there isn't enough air movement to flutter a piece of tissue at the top and air movement can't be detected on moist skin.
All in all, a fun project.
I'm concerned that due to the fact you're painting money this could be a felony. It might not be what you want to do, but using a copper strip of some sort might save you from going to jail in the future.
