Umrao Jaan (Rekha) hungers for a life outside the lurid trappings of a high-class brothel, where she was raised and now serves. The romantic attachments she forms, first, with a nobleman, and, then, an outlaw provide her opportunities for escape, but as Umrao Jaan rudely learns, any freedom from the confines of the brothel, any shot at a meaningful life beyond, will test her heart to its limits.
