  virtual ram is just a file in your harddisk. making it bigger will slow windows, especially xp.
  
  windows uses virtual ram, if the physical ram is not enough, and at that time, your computer's performance drops. also, windows likes to use virtual ram more than physical.
  
  if you don't have any ram monster applications (like working with huge files in photoshop, rendering HD quality videos in After Effects, or 3dsmax, maya, xsi, etc.) it is best to keep the virtual ram settings in default values.
