to ask how many people would not realize you were joking, then I read further down. Guess it's too late. Man, it amazes me that some people have enough brain power to even live.

This was part of an experiment for research that is destined to be printed in Science. The research is about suggestibility, or in very simple terms, just how gullible people can be. There are other chains elsewhere on Metacafe (some with more hilarious results, e.g. 'what is hidden' on Metacafe), and on other public domain fora. Since all the comments are posted in the public domain they are 'fair game', and can be included in the paper, although to protect people's anonymity their log in titles will be withheld. The research is focussed on the nature of the ideas that are put to people, how they are influenced by the comments of others, and how the react when presented with the reality and their gullibility. It's due to be published in June, and I'll post details when they are availalbe. Thanks for your input!

Thanks Pokey - I like the idea of cute better than naive. I'm way too smart to be naive. Isn't it even more amusing though, how some people will believe pretty much anything? Making funny/silly/ ridiculous/cute postings on Metacafe has become a new hobby of mine. Try searching 'what is hidden', and look at some of the posts (and replies!) around the 'Acid Reflux Theory' of how JFK died. The results are terrific.

...I think those who have rated jkaarbo2's post as 4 insightful have got it well wrong. Read carefully and what he's telling you, and I assume he's being serious, is that as a 20 year old drunk driver he killed four people. That's right, he killed four people.

He says he's served his time, and the thoughts of the four people he killed haunt him. Of course they haunt him, and of course he thinks about it often. That doesn't diminish what he did. He feels remorse - anyone except a complete savage would feel remorse.

So, let's not get all gooey and gushy and rate a convicted drunk driver who is responsible for the deaths of four people as some kind of guru.

Don't drink and drive - that's a powerful message even from someone who hasn't killed four people, isn't it?

A message is always more powerful when the person it is coming from is giving it because of a personal experience. I'm 20 years old now and I know quite a few people who do drink and drive; they all assume they're too good at driving to get into an accident, even while drunk, so they think the benefits of driving drunk far outweigh the consequences. They would never listen to a person who just said something like "hey, drinking and driving is bad, don't do it". There is a chance that they might listen to a person who could say "I know how you feel, I used to drink and drive too, I thought I'd never cause an accident either... but I did". jkaarbo2 has more insight into this situation because he has been there and he has witnessed the negative consequences of his actions for himself.
