News Reporter Gets Bombed On Camera

  • Friendly fire.

All too often ordnance is loosed off without proper target identification.
John Simpson wrote a book, "A Mad World, My Masters", telling of this and many other examples of the stupidity of war.
It's not new. My uncle was fired on by american tanks during the second world war, despite the fact that he was commanding a Sherman tank just like theirs, with clear british identity badges. But when the germans tigers came out of the treeline, all the u.s. tanks fled. Leaving him to comment "My allies were my enemy and my enemies saved my life."

    • Just a little bit of info that hasn't be...

How do they know it was an F-15? because 1) John Simpson is a seasoned war reporter and knows what he's looking at. but more importantly 2) the american soldiers in the convoy told him it was.

Secondly, all this talk about the confusion of war and such... it should be mentioned that the US soldiers that called in the airstrike (on an enemy tank a few miles away).... WERE TRAVELING IN THE SAME CONVOY FFS!

    • Well, thanks...

because the video shows an F-14 Tomcat, NOT an F-15 Eagle. The wings are totally NOT those of an Eagle, nor is the shape of the fuselage and the nose. Maybe an Eagle DID drop on them, but what we see is a Tomcat. Anyways, in every war there are incidents like this, and on every side. A terrible clip to watch, but it does give a new perspective to what for most people is just a tidy "aerial view" war.

my late grandad told me, when British planes fly over the Germans run, when Germans flew, the allies ran & when the septics turned up everyone ran.
These happen all to often caused by the Americans, a gung ho! load of trigger happy idiots & this is from a member of the RAF Regiment

When the US base was in the Philippines, they had bomb a entire village of Natives or aboriginals claiming because they mistaken the village as the training ground. Hurray to American High Technology and reliable intelligence. As it said in the movie of Armageddon " American Technology , Russian Technology they are all made in f**king Taiwan"

Americans are just stupid thats all you can say. Cant you tell the location of the target over the radio not the GPS system. do it the old fashion when your technology fails on you. And what about those other mess ups? They shot inosent people in their houses because they thought they were insergions waiting till the troops will come in their houses to kill them?
And why the F***k they stick their nose in every shit pile they see? let me give examples of some of the countries - South Korea, Africa, Russia, Afganistan.
And why they want to help Ukraine to start a conflict with Russia?

    • To give some perspective

Most countries needing help request assistance from the UN. But the US wields such power and resources that the UN is forced to bow to it, and is powerless to stop the US acting out of its own interests.

The US didn't lift a finger in WWII until they were attacked by Japan.
The US did help out Kuwait but they have a vested interest in the oil, and most of the west has a slightly shameful relationship with the Middle East because of the oil
However to my knowledge Sierra Leone and Somalia are different. THe US would love to think they are the good guys, which they are as long as their interests are served. I'd like to see them do more to help prevent genocides.

By oaMaaM 1144213444 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Not F111

That is definetly not an F-111. Not that I'm expert the only planes I can recognise are F-111, FA-18, and C130. Australias AF is the RAAF (RAF is the poms).
RAAF didn't have F111's in Iraq, at least not early on, as they were all grounded in Australia due to investigations into an accident and maintenance issues.

It does not surprise me, in every war there is friendly fire casualties.
Why does a fighter pilot think he needs to bomb people?
They are supposed to be attacking heavy targets, like tanks and artillery.

  • Get your aircraft right.

It's an F-14 Tomcat not an Eagle (F-15).
The same one used in Top Gun.
You can distinctly tell by the shape, esp. the wings.
They can strike faster and at a moments notice since they are near at sea onboard a carrier (Maybe at the Persian Gulf) Same goes for F-18 Hornets. The Navy carries attack jets F-14's and F-18's, FYI.
But who really cares.. all the F's are F'ing deadly as you can see. The thing that bugs me is why this happens too many times; death by friendly fire. They need to spend half of the billions of dollars they have to correct this problem.

    • Here's a better idea...

...save ALL the money we're wasting in Iraq ($1trillion by conservative estimates) and get the hell out of there NOW.

God, I hate the Pentagon. I hate defense contractors that grow fat making bombs that blow up women, childeren and BBC corespondants. I hate my fellow americans whose TV-addled brains are incapable of forming dissenting thoughts and opinions. I hate flag waving morons who think the Pentagon defends our liberty. (What could possibly be more manifestly untrue?)

But most of all, I hate the architects of this war. Ironically, that BBC cameraman has seen more actual war (in those 5 minutes) that all of the following people combined: Geoge Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and Paul Wolfowitz - VIET NAM DRAFT DODGERS ALL OF THEM.

    • Get your aircraft right

The first image of the aircraft looked more like a British Tornado, not 14 or 15. Didn't see the twin vertical stabilizers. The second image half way through the edited video did look like a 14

By CalledXX 1144207809 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Look again...

The first image, although blurry and wobbly, is definitely an F-14 in a nosedive position with a camera view from under the plane (landing gear facing camera).
It's not heading towards the camera as I had first thought, which makes it look like a single vertical stabilizer or with 2 angled vertical stabilizers as I had first thought, guessing it was an F-18. Then I got a really good pause.

By CathyI 1143597788 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Something to think about if you can be h...

I note that some of you really have no clue as to what you are talking about. The plane is an F-14 (99% certain). The pilot saw a convoy and engaged it. Enemy convoys are legitimate targets for aircraft. They are not used only on hardened targets as stated above. Who know what intel the pilot did or did not have. He made a mistake but he has to make certain assumptions none the less and he has to make them under combat conditions. With perfect hindsight, he could have done better. Perhaps there was nothing that could have helped. Remember, bad guys can shoot at airplanes too.

RE: Cathy. True. 50 million people can now blame or rather more accurately thank George W. Bush for their liberation in the last 5 years. Or were Iraq and Afghanistan better places before? And Cathy, assuming that you are a female, how do you think women were treated by those now deposed tyrrants? Women in those countries can now do what you probably have always taken for granted. Should Saddam be put back in power? Do you really want his "rape rooms" back in operation? One more little item just as trivia, you can blame G. W for the fact that thousands of children in both countries will NOT die this year as they would have simply because they are now vacinated from the most basic childhood diseases. They were not before. Est. 70,000 in Afghanistan alone. Per year. From things like Diphtheria and Cholera. All that seems to be forgotten in all this.

As for this incident, war is and always will be messy, bloody, horrific. Innocent people will always be hurt no matter what measures are taken to avoid them. The fog of war. Friendly fire is far less likely now than in past wars but, as is evident here, it still happens and probably always will. Just one example: At least one US sub was sunk by the US Navy in friendly fire in WWII. Over 100 men gone in a single moment. The military does spend billions trying to develope anti friendly fire systems. The ones now are far better than those used in the First Guld War but nothing is perfect. You do the best you can with what you have.

And just as an aside, think for a moment about this. Last year, in the US, 40,000 died in car "accidents". Most could have been avoided. Do any of you who condemn the pilot here feel the same way about the idiot driving by you who causes a wreck while they yammer on a cell phone or don't obey the basic traffic laws? Perhaps some of you drive just as poorly? Be honest. 40,000 people per year, gone. Makes friendly fire in this war look rather tame doesn't it. And I bet many of you here even think anything of it. Maybe you should before you condemn this pilot. "People in glass houses..."

    • It's amazing how many people don't know ...

The US has been at war with Iraq since 1991 when they invaded an ally of the US....Kuwait, to expand Iraq. The US came to Kuwait's defense and chased the Republican Guard back into southern Iraq when Saddam "surrendered" by signing a resolution agreeing to certain terms.....such as letting UN inspecters search for weapons. After giving Saddam over 20 opportunities to uphold his side of the agreement, the US gave him one last deadline in 2003 to cooperate with the UN and Saddam pretty much said he will never comply with the resolution he signed. Additionally, during the 10-yr cease-fire, Iraqi forces fired on US planes hundreds of times. The problem is that the US/UN should have went back into Iraq after the 1st time Saddam didn't comply with his surrender agreement....but Clinton had other things to worry about....like Hilliary!!

Is it not possible nowadays to have a system that would allow the pilot and ground forces to double check that what they are both looking at is the same thing.
A device like iff that would allow the pilot to send a signal at the target,a bit like a laser designater.
All ground troops would have a reciever that would warn them they`ve been locked on to.
The reciever sends a coded response that will not permit the plane to drop its payload.
I understand you wouldnt want these falling into the enemies hands but the codes could be changed daily
