There are various methods of incision to consider for breast augmentation. According to Dr. Robert J. Schwartz, the practice of inserting through the belly button is more of a gimmick than anything else. He notes that it is important to create a very precise pocket to put the implants in because the positioning of the pocket controls where the implant sits. Because of this, with the belly button method, there is not much control over the pocket. For Dr. Schwartz, it is not smart to give up precision in operation for trying to hide a scar in a kind of 'gimmicky' way.

Two other methods that give the best control over making the best, most precise pockets are through the nipple (via a semi-circular incision) and underneath the breast in the crease. These provide the best results in the long-run.
