When considering a tummy tuck or liposuction, there are three areas to consider, as Dr. Robert J. Schwartz highlights: 1) extra skin, 2) muscles that have been stretched out, and 3) excess fat. The first two, which can be caused by weight changes or pregnancy, generally call for simply tummy tuck surgery. Liposuction is commonly used to remove excess fat, because it only addresses the problem of excess fatty deposits, while only mildly tightening the skin.

If the patient has all three of these problems, then he or she may want to consider undergoing both tummy tuck surgery and liposuction. This can be done at the same time or as separate procedures. Deciding what surgery should come first depends on what is going to be more significant for the patient.
