The vid was good until that ad bombed it.

Just an FYI for anyone who decides to try this. If the lights low have too low of an impedance, it will destroy the amplifiers in your stereo.

You should put a resistor in series first - either 4 ohm or 8 ohm, depending on your stereo.

Hey, I even impressed some girls when I told them about lantern batteries and camera batteries containing smaller batteries... they were all about using the cheaper batteries to save money. Be sure to check the total resistance of the string of lights, the typical minimum impedance load for a home stereo is 8 ohms, being below that will risk blowing the amp. This hack has other risks as well. So I wouldn't go hooking it up to your $3000 Denon or Marantz receiver or something.

We use to do this with light's in our car's people couldn't figure it out.

Doing this is applying a load to your stereo amplifier that is not 8 ohms. This can overload the output transistors. This will result in a very expensive repair. If you insist on doing this, do it on a crap stereo because over time, the light bulbs will wear down the output transistor

I did the same with third stop-light of a car, and my amplifier died...when I measured the impendance, it was 700 ohms, and the speakers are 8 ohms, so...don't try this too loud.
