Pilot does a great job
And most of them also were KLM planes.
Same guy ? or really poorly positioned airport somewhere in the Netherlands ?
I think its schiphol, the amsterdam one, at least the control tower and the area looks the same
By netwizard 1203905975This is a very typical, standard cross wind landing; they are done every single day. The pilot used standard, cross control techniques to keep the plane aligned with the runway.
By Jeff in Lodi Wi 1204595131He probably used autopilot, thats whay every plane uses...a pilot is almost useless. I know a pilot, he told me that he basically sits around the entire flight and lets the autopilot do the job for him.
By Bugatti123 1203993680what your pilot friend said is true to a certain extent mostly during cruise most pilots prefer to hand fly the plane from takeoff to cruising altitude and decent (some cases) and approach. Some pilots even prefer to hand fly an entire flight if it is less than 90 minutes. If the autopilot was on it was disengaged long before the video started rolling besides autopilot/appr hold switch won't flare for you he does and most airlines have a mandatory distance the autopilot must be off by. Most airlines it's 1000ft or 500ft
By Chanman613 1204273987They have been fitting all jets with these tips for they save lots of fuel by doing so.
By excuse_me! 1197344887Yes, that's a good pilotage. But, I believe it is risky for civilian aircraft. He should be using a more suitable runway.
By Sherifaw 1200245873We are not always given the option of landing on the most favorable runway. At times runways are closed for maintenance, snow removal or for what ever reason the airport operators deems necessary. Not to mention the wind does not always cooperate from which direction it blows.
By emd3 1203558351That's a DC10 which is jumbo class and appears to move slower than it really is. I've been on lots of landings worse than that, where it looks like the wings are going to touch the ground. Because of the large size, it's hard to judge how fast it's really going. Obviously a significant cross wind.
By jpv3 1199250832My Dad was one of the first pilots to fly the DC-10 out of Long Beach back in the 70's and he retired from MD in the 80's. Wish he was still here to tell me which plane it is. Thank guys you for making me smile.

Normally GA aircraft (small planes) will "crab" during final, keeping centered on the center line but allowing the plane to "turn into the wind". This is done down to about the Decision Height, at which point opposite rudder is used to swing the nose even with the runway. Larger aircraft have main landing gear that is made for crosswind wind landings due to the side load. Some landing gear actually will pivot to a small extent to take some of the stress off.
Pretty decent to see the larger aricraft landing using this technique.
The other is to "slip" down to the runway, using the rudder and aerilons to keep the aircraft centered to the middle of the runway, however this can be very uncomfortable for the passengers. Also, the winds tend to dispate as you get closer so the chance to over control is possible. Sorry, going thru my PPL ground school right now. ; )
As an airline pilot, I can assure you, this is just part of the standard skills that all good pilots possess. Even those who fly light aircraft learn how to handle crosswind landings as a private pilot. As far as being on an autopilot, that crosswind probably exceeded the limitations of the autolanding system and was more likely hand flown. A gusty crosswind makes for a fun challenge for those of us in the profession. We take days like this in stride as they keep our personal flying skillls honed, and after all, isn't that what you want?
By PilotPeg 1204191215This is an MD11 aircraft, flight KL 671 from Amsterdam landing in cross winds at Montreal on Sept 24/2006. Video taken by Stephane Quenneville. Original posting can be found at flightlevel350.
By Trevor1292 1203401585wow really impressive, you gotta think he enjoyed the challenge.
By musteo 1203244929I've seen worst crosswinds, but this takes great skill to keep the plane on track. Major Props to the pilot
By BiggaStill 1203029672cool vid
not as dramatic as some of the vids of the old Hong Kong Intl tho, those give me chills! And sparks fly...
He uses crosswind technique till he is close to the end of runaway however this is not a Cessna where the total deal would be controls into the wind upwind wheel touching first and rudder controlling the directional down the runway exercize... Nein this is not how big jets work
only cessna's and such---Yes, great piloting obviously-- a pro who is probably practicing in cessna often as well for a
sometimes more dramatic effect given light weight and angle of crosswind--me thinks
;>)
This video is of the MD-11 advanced flight testing phase. Boeing/McDonnell Douglas takes these planes to an airfield in South America (sorry don't know exactly where) known for its heavy crosswinds to test the planes engineering and structural components. It is being flown by a test pilot. KLM colors but not full markings because the plane has not been officially 'delivered' yet. There are no passengers on board. And yes, the pilot is most definitely amazing!!
By JAYahooooo 1201920343It is a normal revenue flight because you can see the airport's terminal in the background and the high wind test airport are just a stretch lengthy runway and most of Boeing's crosswind testing is done at an airport in either Iceland or Greenland not South America. Plus the MD-11 was stopped in 1998 and the last one was delivered in like 2001 if it was testing it'd be KLM's responsibility not Boeing's responsibility
By Chanman613 1204094280they have skilled and a bit friendly staff. But i guess this is the only thing they have; no good timings, no good routing, no new aircrafts and most of all no hot chicks on board lol
By DrVAMPIRE 1201406178Doesn't look like a crosswind landing. Looks a lot more like a slip (maneuver used to drop altitude quickly without gaining much airspeed). He was probably given instructions to do a short approach or something and needed to dump altitude quickly - hence the slip.
By daveharpe 1200636463What would a cross-wind landing look like then? If you think this is a side-slip please tell us you are not a pilot ...
By peggers 1202046350but i don't wanna be in that guy's plane... don't ask me why
By The Quiet One 1199340749Most people would not even notice how the pilot was landing. They would most likely be oblivious to the situation.
I've heard that KLM hires the best pilots. This seems to suggest the rumor is true.
i dont get what where looking at but if its the way the planes landing then thats the way they always land
first nice flying :D second does he do that to adjust the plane? and if yes why can't he just fly straight and landing straight on the runway instead of doing that crosswind landing?
By badboy300 1197265472he has to do this, cuz the wind is blowing hard from the right side when this was landing!.. you cant control which direction wind is blowing from, runways are constructed as per high probability of maximum headwind, but when wind blows frm the side, we would have to counteract so we fly straight!
