forgot to mention.....the earth's core is actually filed with creamy nougat. (I'm not supposed to be even telling you this....we geologists had hoped to keep this to ourselves and have a feast, after our super-secret robot clones destroy the rest of you---remember....mums the word....good thing no one reads the internet these days)

Ha! This is great comedy! I will show it to my geology class next semester when I teach the plate tectonics part. Floating "willy nilly"? Not quite. The interior of the earth beneath the rigid lithosphere is plastic and mobile. Plate movements are measurable today, while the "inflating earth" is not. No subduction? Subduction zones are found on earth today, forming the deep oceanic trenches and explaining the chains of volcanoes related to them. Conspiracy? Over 100 years? HA! Scientists in the 1960s were convinced that continents did not move. Yet the evidence for plate tectonics accumulated, and the geologists all changed their views, virtually over night. What possible motivation would there be for "holding back" this new "idea?" I do hope all you people who believe in this work of comedy will sign up for a basic geology class. You are welcome in mine! Keep laughing--it's good for your health. If you like this bit, I also recommend anything from The Onion website.

I am still confused...! Does it mean earth is growing in diameter... or what?
OR growing in terms of in absence of water that earth is growing, well obviously if we suck out all the water from the earth there will be all land... isnt it?

While the thories of sub-atomic particles, astronomy, and geology may change do to this concept, Newtonian physics would remain the same. MASS and size are two different, and unrelated, things. The density of Saturn(its specific gravity) is less than one (this means it would float on water), yet its gravity is so strong, an Earthling couldn't standup. What of the water? Snowball Earth suggests that enough water could be held on the land. However the expanding Earth theory fails to explain the "Ring of Fire." Subduction does. All in all, we (the human race) should remain open minded to new theories, for after all, the ancients were confident that the Earth was FLAT! Our logic is no more flawless than theirs.

Smaller means spins faster, so based on this theory the earth is slowying down??? sure it is, but cause of fricction of air and water, but beside this fact this theory says earth is lot smaller than today, and spins lots faster too? nosense...

Ever see what happens when you burn magnesium? This tiny piece produces a much less dense looking material like a snake.. It coils and twirls outwards and ends up a much larger ie:taking up more room than it did initially.

I believe its plausible that the core/magma could be made of condensed heavy materials and therefore would explain why its such a slow release in these relatively small cracks from which the magma and other material escapes.. We already know there is a lot of pressure in there. Look at volcanoes.. enough pressure being released to explode tons of material and gasses into the air.. Perhaps as material fills in the ever growing cracks a lot of gasses are left in its stead?

Just a thought or two on the subject..

not enough information here to either accept or dismiss this theory. however i dont see the conspiracy? ther would be no point in hideing this, in fact his is nobel pice prize wining material if true...thats why i am inclinde to say its wrong.

This is pretty funny. He actually claims the plates dont move while conceding in the same speech that they are floating on magma. It almost sounds convincing though. Is this onion news?

I like Sea Floor Spreading better than Space Dust theory. How about an idea that the Earth's core is made of compressed energy that is decompressing slowly thus expanding the Earth slowly?

This is called Sea Floor Spreading, magma from the core pushed out along plates in the sea, extremely slow, the earth begings to grow over millions of years.
Just look up sea floor spreading.

thats pretty cool .. and i like it .. since the universe is supposed to be expanding constantly .. why shouldnt the earth do the same. .. i mean if we place a rubber band between our fingers.. finger=universe, rubber band=earth/planets .. then when we seperate our fingers the rubber band also grows .. meaning the planets GROW or EXPAND :)
I really like the theory because it spices up the slightly boring class of physics..

This is a crazy idea I would have never thought about. But here is the BIG problem with what you are saying. Where does the extra mass come from? Better yet where did the water come from? Another thing..... Gravity and cooling of the core. Both of those are working against a growing of the Earth theory. We would have to be taking on a huge amount of material all the time to support this theory. But the way this was shown it's that the Earth is growing from the inside out at the same rate all over the globe like putting air in a balloon. Again..... where is the mass coming from that would be filling the balloon? I think this ones a bit off.

well is it at all posible that the new ground is coming from deep within the earth and hollowing the earth our a bit? jusy trowing that out there and as for the water idk but i belive pangera was covered in swamp and marsh so that could be the anwere =S

If the Earth is growing, where is the extra mass coming from? If it's space dust, there must be a heck of a lot of dust falling all the time! This is something that should be fairly easy to detect.
This is an entertaining theory, but there seems to be no evidence to support it.

Your theory is very easy to be tested: studying rock at the edge of today's continents should reveal that they match between continents. But I don't think that has ever been the case.

for a fact, that the Earth is bombarded with space dust on a daily basis. i have known this since second grade.
