The British-built Ultima GTR has blitzed Top Gear’s test track – setting the fastest time ever recorded by a production car.

But the lightweight sportscar won’t be heading up the Top Gear leaderboard, as the GTR’s run wasn’t an official test for the BBC show.

The spectacular 720bhp Ultima GTR lit up the Dunsfold test track and set a time of 1m 12.8s – more than four seconds faster than the current leader of the board, the Koenigsegg CCX, which managed it in 1m 17.6s.

Sadly, because Top Gear’s tame racing driver wasn’t behind the wheel, the run won’t count as an official Top Gear power lap.
