I disagree... though we may have incredible abilities through science and technology that will enhance everything, those technologies will initially be developed for the purpose of our species survival - developed to sustaining a race of beings that has multiplied and grown to a level which only one planet will be able to sustain. Whether or not we become a utopian world like 1984, or cybernetic like Ghost in the Shell, is auxiliary to the fact that humans WILL keep doing the nasty and multiplying... it's one of the best parts of being "alive" and "human", and I don't think our descendants will ever completely eliminate that part of our nature (sex), or the biological means which is needed to experience it: the human body. Sure - some people say "we will just take a sex pill" and "people will be grown in test tubes"... and to that I say: oh please, stop being so Type 0. ;p

  • It does make sense...

Type II and III is God. His robots? Us - the human race.

  • But what are we when we get there?

By his definition, yes, we are nearing Type 1. But something more interesting happens simultaneously. We cease to be human, and individuality takes a tumble. Our great grandchildren will have direct brain interfaces to a cognitive web. They will have direct access to massive computing power which will assist their cognition. They, not we, will reshape biology and mix it freely with technology. Their "children", not we, will utilize nano-construction to build energy-collecting structures around the sun with intelligence distributed throughout it. Within 1000 years, there will be no humans left, except perhaps in biodiversity "zoos". Individuality will be hard to define within the intelligence that will then be distributed around the Sun as a "Type I" civilization. As for Type II or Type III, that is largely beyond our imagination.
