    • Cool Video

This is a really cool video. It must take years to master all those moves. I now see where that dude in the master swordsman video gets his stuff from. Dark video but worth a look.

    • can you?

Every loser who doesnt know asks that. The power of intimidation. "I cant do martial arts! I better come up with a comment to make them look wothless!" Plus Im pretty sure that if both of us had guns, Id still win.

youve said what i've been thinking for so long about these "duuh. . .well i got a gun n i can shoot a bajillion million stuffs from outer space!" people. While 'tis true the gun can be more lethal than a blade in the modern world, the fact still remains that noone is invincible, especially without training.

    By akaikumo 1186853204
  • interesting

everyone says that his martial art is the best.
fine let everyone think what they want but i am an aikidoka and i know:
aikido is a "do" a way of living.
it is made to lern how to live in a way that harmonises body, energy and mind.
this is learned thru martial techniques who are based on very strict rules for movements and actions. every movement has to be perfect.
but, aikido in wrong hands is a LETHAL martial art!!!
for example: irimi-naga seems to be a (rather)gentle way to put someone on the floor but when used with bad intensions its actually made to crush someones neck by pulling it over!!!
but serious, aikido is not made for this, remember that.

    • Wrong again...

Aikido was developed in the 1920's and 30's by Morihei Ueshiba. What you are referring to is aikijutsu, which is a horse of an alltogether different color.

      By Gravedust 1183015893
  • hmm...

is aikido the martial arts form where they practise with swords till they can draw, cut you in two, and resheath almost before you can see what is going on?

i have seen a movie of somebody demonstrating all moves from draw till sheath (draw, strike, get rid of the blood, sheath), and it was QUICK

    By thorin 1146861078
    • Samurai??

Actually no, Aikido was created rather recently. In the early 1940 or something, the founder of it fought in the war. I think Russo Japanese war, and no it wasn't used by Samurai. It is a purely defensive martial art designed for an unarmed person to defend themselves again armed or unarmed attackers.

  • this is a show martial arts

ok if you need to or want to learn a fighting tecknique that will really hurt someone. tae kwon doe is the most effectitive. that is why it is an olympic sport. i myself tae tae kwon doe and if i were to fight someone just on the street it would end very fast.

    By slipknotROCKS 1145728340
    • well there is a difference

tae kwondo is a very agressive martial art, like thai box, karate, etc.
Why would you want to hurt someone? if someone is bothering you you could kick his ass and, at least here in europe, he could sue you for hitting him. A friend that is really good boxing have this problem all the time, he can't protect himself without destroying the face of the other guy (nose broken, teeth broken, fat lips black eyes, etc) with aikido you could still protect yourself by inmobilizing your opponent without having to kill him.

      By Bcnbartender 1147754529
    • Tae Kwon Doe... lol

TKD is the most laughed at art in most martial arts circles I have been in. I have taken Judo, Gojo Ru, Isshinryu, Okinawan Kempo, Aikido, Ninjitsu, and learned from military instructors who teach close combat to Marines and Special Forces.

TKD is dangerous in the hands of a professional. And it has value for the mental and physical conditioning. But as a fighting art it really does not stack up to some of the others. There are few other arts as showy as TKD.

My personal favorite is Ninjitsu. Take it at a non-commercial dojo from people who love the art. (In basements or community centers usually) Make sure it is with the Bujinkan under the guidance of Soke Masaaki Hatsumi. They call the art Budo Taijitsu now, but it is the art of the ancient Ninjas. Hatsumi Sensi trained under, and received his title from, the last of the Ninjas. There are no awards, and no competitions. There are only three coolers of belt: white, green, and black. There are 9 levels within green and at least a dozen levels in black. People go there to train, not to look cool.

      By oblivionwolf 1145775551
    • Wait!

TKD does not have low kicks as Tang Soo Do. Low kicks are very usefull. If you receive a couples of low kicks you will not be able to kick as TKD does it. I have fight with taekwondokas and the first thing that I did was kill they legs.
However, taekwondokas where always very fast and strongs enough. But I think they sholuld try with low kicks as Tang Soo Do.

      By DiegokU 1145925244

The only thing you will do if you face an aikido fighter is to run and the tail on your back + you will flee as far as you can cowerd..your good at talking, and talk is cheap ..

      By The samurai 1145730805
    • I doubt you know what martial arts is

That's funny coming from a BJJ fighter. So the best way to win a fight is to roll around on the ground with an attacker outside where there are rocks, sticks, glass, gravel, etc? Are you going to make him tap out? Odds are you don't have the mental fortitude to take a submission lock past the point of pain to breakage. What if he doesn't want to play by your rules and decides to <gasp> strike you!? What if he grabs a cinderblock or stick and attacks? Going put him in your guard and hope for the best? I am so sick of meatheads like you who give MMA a bad name because you can't appreciate smoother, subtler forms of martial arts. Any style is effective if the person possess keener technique, superior speed, and strength.

      Yours truly,
      A Pankration fighter

  • Nice artistic martial art..

It's great watching other martial arts, sometimes you can pick up techniques or movements which can be put to use in sparring. Some of the moves and techniques in this video were a bit too slow though to be put into practice in real world situations.

    By BLACKBELT 1145704056
  • Please don't study Aikido....

If you want to be very good, study Aikijujitsu first.
Master that, then you will start to learn and fully understand Aikido.
Ueshiba started from Aikijujitsu, he later developed Aikido which is a much higher level of Aikijujitsu.
You won't get to the level of true Aikido without understanding its roots. They are both extremely similar.
I promise you...find a good Aikijujitsu school. Study that and then you will be excellent in Aikido. You will also know which Aikido schools are crap, and there are tons of crap Aikido instructors who don't know anything.

Learning Aikido without understanding Aikijujitsu first is like teaching a grade schooler Calculus without teaching him Addition first.

    By quietsalmon 1145684242
    • you

are full of it and dont know what you are talking about. can u learn to use a computer without learning to use a typewritter first? I pretty much beleive u can. You dont need to learn an aincient art in order to understand Aikido. Aikido is complete by itself and its system has been developed and structured so well that Aikijutsu could be called obsolete in comparrison. Oh well, Im sure you rather use your old typewriter instead of a nice new Notebook. Or your "walkman" instead of an Ipod, but well... you dont make a lot of sense.

      By red warrior 1149987843
    • I don't fully agree

you can beguin with aikido and understand it if your sensei is good.
My sensei has been teaching aikido fro 30 years, some of his pupils have been with him for mor than 20 years! he is 60 and fast like a snake and he is 7dan aikido and 4 dan iaido

    He is the best.

    By DiegokU 1145053955
  • My respet to Sensei Ueshiba

Aikido teachs respect, discipline and Aikido practicioners are very nice people. But I don`t think Aikido moves would work to defend your self in the street... Some years ago. I tough Aikido is a supreme martial art. But after know more, I search for another martial arts. Pherhaps some people are not searching just self defense or a place where to fight. Maybe they are looking for a philosophic martial art. And they feel great practicioning that techniques. But I hate Steven Seagal films.

    By DiegokU 1145053757
    • A brief about sensei Morihei Ueshiba

Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) is the founder of Aikido who's known as O -sensei or the great techer to Aikido students. He spent many years in studying and mastering the ancient arts of the samurai which are Aikijujutsu , jojutsu, Iaijutsu, and kenjutsu, and after that he start to create an art which is a combination of all these arts which is Aikido. Morihei was in the military in the world war 1 after that he quit, he wanted Aikido to be more than a martial art so he combined many things in Aikido such as how to breath, relax and concentrate in the right way which is very important in practicing Aikido. Aikido is the unification of your body, mind and spirit which is the goal of practicing Aikido. The daily practice in Aikido will show you the way to understand a powerful martial art + Aikido is well-known as the art of peace.

      By The samurai 1145077671
    • Thank you very much

Now I know a little more abou O-sensei Ueshiba.
Tell me, does Aikido uses katas?

      By DiegokU 1145925521
    • there are no katas in aikido

but their is a style called Yoshinkan Aikido that uses katas

      By The samurai 1146145141
    • Thank you, Samurai

      I`ll search about it.

      By DiegokU 1146454684
  • I don`t like Aikido

Looks some sissy. I can`t imagine using that moves in the street. People doesn`t attack like that. They don`t cooperate like that. Nobody is so fool to attack like that. Aikido is intereting as a complement to other martial arts but I don`t like it. Hapkido is some similar but it uses a lot of kicks and punches. Maybe I`m wrong. But that`s what I think. Aikido is great only in a dojo when everyone nows how is gonna be the attack.

    By DiegokU 1145053257
    • Street fighting

Aikido is one of the best arts in street fights. It is devastating if you add just a little power to it. That is why it is the thing-of-choice within e.g. the Japanese police and many special forces around the world, like the navy SEALS.
There is not always predecided moves in training, but you learn to develop a sensitivity about what the enemy will do, - an attunement if you like.
The difference between shows and fights is only that in a presentation, the enemy signals "stop." by waving his arm or knock in the floor, while in a fight you brake his limbs or hit him at the right spots, like the neck or the kyusho jitsu points, which will paralyze or kill him.

      By Pusekatt 1150933258
    • you don't understand...

this cooperation is very important in the beguining to understand the nature of the movement, like walking or anything else you learn slowly, when you do your shodan you get a randory where many people attack you at the same time and you have to deffend yourself using all the tecnick you have learn. They also practice with woden swords which help to perfect the movements and to improve the reflexes

      By Bcnbartender 1147755014
    • your not right..

Aikido would work in a real fight for sure , i practice aikido and i am sure that it's useful in a real fight, it was created from ancient arts that belongs to the samurai martial arts such as Aikijujutsu, kenjutsu and Iaijutsu..and the one who practice the art he's the persone who judge right, so please try to practice it at least once then tell me your opinion..

      By The samurai 1145075625
    • Sorry, but I don`t think so

Where I live there is a lot of fights. And the way they attack is very different. In a street fight they will not cooperate with they moves as aikidokas does it.

      By DiegokU 1145925695
    • It works

I have been successful in ending every fight I've had the misfortune not to avoid. Aikido among other styles has served me well. I'm not perfect, been stabbed and shot a couple of times but I was still able to remove the will to fight in my attackers. If it works, you live, if not...

      By knightshade 1154574107
    • I´m glad nothing happened to you......

But I´m still thinking thata techniques wouldn`t work where I live.
      Good luck.

      By DiegokU 1154614629
    • Aikido in a real fight....

I've studied Aikijujitsu and Aikido for years and let me tell you something about it.
From experience and observation, the only techniques that are effective and that you will possibly ever use in a real fight would be the first 3 techniques they teach you at white belt level and not the higher level fancy ones you see. They are taught first because by the time you reach black belt, you will only just then begin to understand it after hours and hours and years of seeing it and teaching it.
Even then, you may not even be able to use it depending on the fighting situation.

If you've been studying Aikido for years and you didn't know the first 3 techniques (ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo) are the most important, than you've just wasted your time because you still don't get it.

      By quietsalmon 1145685834
  • The Arts...

Akido is much like jujitsu in that it is a defensive art. The purpose of learning is for self protection. One should not practice these arts if their intent is to hurt others by being the "aggressor". Jujitsu (from Japanese Jû, 'gentle'), uses holds, chokes, throws, trips, joint locks, kicks, and atemi (strikes to vital body areas). The techniques are gentle only in the sense that they are directed toward deflecting or controlling an attack; THEY CAN MAIM OR KILL! Many if not all of the moves if done correctly puts the attacker in a very vulnerable position. It is very important that one be able to control himself and focus only one defending himself rather than hurting his attacker. This is the spirit of the arts.

    By canito 1144191560
    • What you are saying is absolutly True...

I am an Aikido practitioner, and Aikido is much more than just a martial art, many things are involved in Aikido such as the way of respecting each other and how to control our breath and our physical enery. In addition , throws, chokes ,joint locks and many different kinds of techniques are involved in Aikido as well + Aikido was created from the ancient Japanese techniques which belongs to the samurai warrios and of course we use the Japanese sword(katana) in our training too. So if are interested go to the nearest dojo to your home!!
