When power outages happen, be prepared with this simple and cheap solar transistor radio mod. **Edit** (Forgot to add in the video) When attaching the resistor, make sure the cathode end (the one with the stripe) is soldered to the positive battery circuit.

    • Fred Gwynne...

was a fine actor and a great man. I'm honored that you think I sound like him. Don't forget, he was also in Pet Sematary as the neighbor.

    • Is the

      Resistor vital to the circuit?

      By poston 1198480260
    • Yes

It works like a gateway, keeping the current only flowing towards the batteries and not back to the solar cell (and thus short-circuiting it).

    • How about a diode in place

of the resistor? Would it not shorten the charging time? Might lenghten the video though, for the explanation of polarity. For my emergency radio, I attach a pair of D cells in a holder with crocodile-clip leads to the battery terminals. Runs for about a month many hours a day. Tip is from Steven "solar" Harris.

    • Sorry...

That was what I meant. Please replace the words "resistor" with "diode". Sorry for any confusion.

    • RESISTOR?

i believe you mean a *DIODE* for the "one way" energy gateway.

a resistor does just that, resists energy and lowers the amount going to the other side.
