This was nothing like Top Gun nor was it meant to be. That's because it is REAL fighter pilots in REAL aircraft. Just LOOK at the way these guys load their planes up and make it look easy. See that vapor coming off of the wing root near the inlets? He just loaded up ("pulled") as much as 7 Gs on his aircraft, that's why the vapor forms, because the airstream goes supersonic going around the leading edge when he pulls Gs like that. The aircraft isn't going supersonic...but the airstream that is forced around the leading edge of the wing IS supersonic because it has further to travel in the same amount of time, so it is forced to go around the wing faster than the relative airspeed of the aircraft. Air is a fluid and this is fluid dynamics. The F-15 doesn't have variable camber leading edges, although it does have variable geometry engine inlets. That's a fascinating adaptation for a modern fighter aircraft...and it's WORKED all these years. The airstream forms a vapor as it goes back to subsonic...which is because it spreads out which causes it to lose pressure...and a pressure drop causes fog....or, a vapor trail. The average person would have passed out and CRASHED into the ground after just one of those gut wrenching high G maneuvers. The most you get at the amusement park is 3Gs...IF that. These guys go in and out of 7Gs like it was nothing. That's because they are the real deal. They are real world Jedi Knights.
