If you want to learn to make hanging shelves, you will digg this... my friends all ask how... you could even hang them from celings or rafters. haha You could even hang a table or a bar like this...hang a cd dvd rack... use your imagination... and easy to move and reinstall without leaving a bunch of holes in the walls.... pretty cool.

    I think by the looks of those boards alittle sanding was in order and even alittle stain. It's not a bad idea for a cheap shelf unit but you mentioned that you used a 10 inch board. Well we all know a 10 inch board inst really a true 10 inch board, my point being that with the hanger rod you had at the bottom would be to close to the wall to be really useful. Just my 2 cents. I did like the way you roped the corners But all in all I think that shelf would be more trouble then it's worth because everytime you bumped it it would be knocking things over.

      actually the more weight you add to these shelves the more stable it becomes.. it does not swing like you think the ropes become tense and very stable.. i have made small ones that hang for coffee cups and have never had anything fall off of them... you can also add more shleves easily later on! This is Great for cement walls... if you use strong eyes you can suppurt lots of weight, have multiple shelves and not make a bunch of holes in a wall, and these are very portable, inexpensive, and easy to do... yes you can varnish them and make them very fancy if you wish too:)
