I totally agree with you after watching the video i saw the cause of it this types of SUKHOI tend to choke when the turbines are running slow and then pushed to the limit.
i think i can explain the crash.......
by kalin_k, 1154607146Report sentSpamReply[+1]
that was the worst flying error i have ever seen, what kind of idiot ever put him in control of that sukhoi?
the pilot simply got scared of losing altitude and hit the throttle too fast......see that trail of black smoke behind the plane? nothing unusual ....it's the cause of too much fuel being pumped in the burning chamber, as we call it the engine just "choked" and did not gave the plane enough power to rise again, after a few moments the engine comes back to normal so it's not a sure way to the grave if that happens.....the accident could have been easely avoided if the pilot would have slowly pushed the throttle up or if he had just a few more altitude......i saw live something like this happen here in romania...... a MIG-29 , his engines "choked" after a slow speed pass, and the plane started to descend....luckly it got back to normal when the plane had just 3 meters from the ground so no one was hurt but whe the pilot got off the plane he was shakin' like a jelly..=))
... that airshow pilots should never direct energy at the crowds. If you are going to do a maneuver that has even the slightest posibility of aiming at a crowd, you do it at a different approach vector. If the pilots had been coming from 90º to the left of the first scene, they would have crashed into the grass and woods, or could have just ejected right away and let the plane hit the woods.
It's amazing that the pilots stayed with it all the way to the ground, though, that is incredibly brave, and they did all they could do. It's the same issue with people in Europe watching rally cars while standing on the side of the road, and then one flips and kills 10 of them. But with airshows, the pilots and planners define their own flight paths, and those should never include the possibility of ending up in a crowd.
Easy to make a comment and give lessons but you surely are not a pilot ....
If so, you should have seen that left engine did quit and plane pushed left side. On top of this, left wing did stalled. Too bad. The only lesson we have to bear in mind is to keep the crowd far from taxiway. Keep cool guy!
I was there actually, we went to look at some plains 50-60 metres away from where it crashed. If we haven't moved, this comment maybe woudn't been here. I think 83 people died. It was horrible to watch.
I was on this sad ending show...Me and my family and some friend of ours, was walking around on that airport in the northwest part of Ukraine on this day. I was really amaced by that plane, because it was flying really low. Only two minuttes before it had passed just over my head.. If the accident had happened that time...Well.. yeah....
I'll never go to a show like this again...
Your talking about the team fliers where one is almost cut in half by another team mate. The blue and gold team? Those are <were> Mig 29's. look closely and you'll see that it actually did not hit the other and cut in half. Rather, it shears the starboard wing right off. the air frame buckles. both pilots survived. the paris airshow in 99 had an su-27 crash after slamming the rear end down destroying the vector thrust instanly and it goes straight up. The pilot survives.
At least 78 people were killed and 115 injured when a Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27UB jet smashed into crowds watching the Lviv airshow's finale on 27 July.
Civilians in it's path were obliterated. 70 of the wounded were critical.
The pilots do not eject until the SU-27UB "flanker" was on the tarmac. They travel about 50-60 yards, hit another aircraft and then they eject. They stayed with it to keep the jet from slamming the bulk of the crowds.
The jet begins to cartwheel after hitting the parked aircraft. The jet mowed right through crowd, cutting through them like grass.
The Sukhoi is an outstanding fighter, and with it's thrust vectoring it's much more maneuverable than US aircraft.
The cause was an engine stall. Two reasons contributed here. With twin jet aircraft an engine stall is worse than both engines failing. With the unbalanced thrush the aircraft will yaw to the weak side immediately. You clearly hear the engine stall, and then you'll notice a black thrust start as the pilot hits the after-burners to compensate for the power loss, but they are too low to recover altitude. They do succeed in leveling out the jet to reduce impact speed, and neither of them eject until after they strike the other jet and as the flanker cartwheels you see them both eject. They were prepared to die avoiding the onlookers. Leveling it out gave them an unxpected second chance to bail out. Look at the directions everything goes including the clearly seen ejection seat.
This happend in ukrain which some of you said and the plane killed at least 88 people or more. The plane he was flying was probebly a SU-27 becous it has no small wings in the front.
Sukhois are planes used by russians just like mig's. Sukhoi planes have high mobility and stability depending on the type of plane.Their is the Sukhoi-

I think that was not an engine problem, most likely it was a plain stall, the pilot did the trick at to low altitude and when the ground was approaching fast he instinctively pulled the stick up to much, exceeding the angle of attack of the wing, killing the lift from the wing. Falling from the sky. ( a factor is the air temperature and humidity, which will reduce the efficiency of the wing. )
Stall can happened at high speed too. Once you exceed the angle of attack of the wing. The lift is gone. Many air show pilots have died the same way.
You don’t see that type of problems in America, at air shows the pilots are forbidden to fly over the crows. Only over the runway or unpopulated areas.
the pilot saw that he was loosiing altitude too quicly and heading towards the croud. He tries to avoid the croud by executing a sharp turn to the left , at that moment the left wing contacts the ground and bring the aircraft to this tradgic end. If he hadn't made the turn he probably would not have crashed.

I've seen this on another site aswell and they said it hit no people. After I first saw this video I researched into it. It hit tons of people. One persons account of it on a website was "Severed arms and legs flew everywhere". In the aftermath video you see arms on the floor, so everybody THIS CRASH KILLED LOADS OF PEOPLE.
And I can say it was one ot the worst video ever seen. The pilot landed uninjured, keeping his head with his hands in the middle of that "horror" scene...

It has been the worst air show crash too date. The SU 27 plowed straight through the crowd line, killing 83 and wounding 116 people.
It happened at Sorensen Airbase, in the Ukraine. Both engines apprently cut out during manoeuvers

If you could understand the announcer speaking in Ukrainian, you'd hear that it WAS pilot error, a miscalculation of the location of the crowd based on a previous training exercise.

Russian fighter planes are some of the best in the world and russian pilots demonstate their full maneuvering capabilities on their airshows.
If you had ever been to a russian air show you would know what I'm talking about.I agree hat there are many russian planes which are not properly maintained due to financial reasons. Their military planes do not fall in this category.
On a more serious note though... it seems like engines cut out a lot at airshows these days like that clip of the MiG-29 and there was one where Saab's new fighter does the same thing. Sad that so many people died and got injured.
Frankly...I've been to too many Air shows...and you never get to see these things until something goes horribly wrong. As a pilot who has faced an engine failure myself, and when thrown against all of my flight time...it's a reality you must face, but recognize that it is a part of flying. The Mig 29 was as a result of a bird being inducted in to the intake, and as the Mig 29 is not a centerline thrust aircraft it induced a spin; if we are in fact thinking of the same incident. The Saab Gripen incident over the city which crashed into the trees was as a result of an unproven aircraft malfunction... basically test flying...again if we're thinking of the same incident. as an airshow promoter...they are safe, fun, enjoyable and well worth the 15 bucks admission.
