Notting Hill raised Norman jay is still one of the most popular DJ’s of the Anglo-Caribbean sound systems which play each August at the Notting hill carnival. At the beginning of the eighties Norman’s Good Times system was the first to integrate American soul & jazz into the reggae-dominated carnival. Norman, who nowadays buys eighty percent of his music in Soho’s house record shops still loves to pop into Honest Jon’s in Notting hill, because at heart he will always be a soul boy. Film maker Terry Walshe followed Norman around for two years. The resulting documentary tracks the history of the Good Times sound system. Norman Jay’s contributions to the influential London pirate radio station Kiss FM made American rare groove popular in England. Not only acid jazz but also the first acid house generation was directly inspired by Norman’s illegal sound system parties. The Jah Shaka sound system is one of the last active London sound systems. The one-man-roots show resides every third Friday at the rocket club in Holloway.
