Sylvia's is the most famous soul food restaurant in the States. The gourmet heaven was founded in 1963 by chef Sylvia Woods. The restaurant is a must see for Harlem visitors. Soul Food originates from Black Americans in the Southern states, it's spicy home-made food with African influences. Sylvia's specialities are grilled chicken and catfish, fried beans, cheese macaroni and yam. Sylvia has published a cook book, which you can buy in the restaurant. Visitors can also buy a spicy soul food sauce. At the weekends Soul and Gospel bands can perform at lunch and dinner times, but confirm it before you go there. The Sunday brunches are very popular with New Yorkers.
