Prithiviraj Fernando (Sri Lanka), head of the Centre for Conservation and Research, Colombo, is working to safeguard wild Asian elephants by balancing their need to range outside of tight 'protected zones' with the needs of paddy farmers whose lives can be devastated by a single crop raid.
