Why are they all unconscious? Are they sleeping? Comatose? Or dead? Are we seeing the elegiac beauty of oblivion in the aftermath of apocalypse? Or have they fallen under a spell? Perhaps they’ve all succumbed to the deadly vapours of a terrorist gas attack, or fallen into the final rapture before being gathered up to Heaven. Or, have they been rocked to sleep by swaying carriages, rattling rails, warmth and alcohol - tube passengers experiencing complete release in the company of perfect strangers. Marked with a devotional intensity, SLEEPER looks on as people sleep on late night underground trains, the images captured covertly, as are our memories of them. In a city saturated with cameras, Kai Lawrence’s film explores the impossibility of privacy in a public space, whilst showing humans at their most unaffected and vulnerable.
