Time to sharpen your quiffs, dust off the old leathers and start revving your Nortons. This week we had a welcome visit from Gravesend’s finest, Tom Allalone and the 78s, whose album ‘Major Sins Pt I’ has been receiving rave reviews since its release in May.

The first thing that struck us about Tom and the boys was a lingering whiff of sex, Swarfega, Brylcream and danger, quickly followed by the heady realisation that this lot are one of the finest, sleaziest, booziest rockabilly bands this side of 1958. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what The Times had to say about them:

‘This impeccably dressed troupe plays blisteringly energetic and classic rock’n’roll (think Elvis Costello and The Attractions covering Billy Fury by way of The Godfathers), and does it very well indeed too. ‘

By the way, for those of you who weren’t paying attention in class, Tom-All-Alone’s was the name of an ungodly slum in Charles Dickens’s Bleak House. If you’ve ever been to Gravesend, you’ll appreciate the significance.
