Don't forget to rate my clip! In 1978, the 12 part series based on James Michener's novel was a big hit. The amazing television drama starred Chief Dan George, Robert Conrad, Richard Chamberlain, Lynn Redgrave, Sharon Gless, Timothy Dalton, Barbara Carrera, Robert Vaughn, Brian Keith, Raymond Burr, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, Donald Pleasence, Dennis Weaver and Alex Karras, among many others. The wonderful music was by John Addison.

  • Best mini series ever

This has always been my personal favorite. I love it so much I copied the audio from my vhs to my computer and created audio cd's. Now I can listen to it wherever I go....took a little work but managed to create it with tracks. Pasquinel is the man and McKeag runner up! Pasquinel has always been my screen name for as long as I can remember as well as my Character name in the World of Warcraft lol. Only problem I had with the series is Michner had all main characters die at happy moments for the character and there is no way Levi could have been sucked under that train at that speed!!!!

  • Don't flame me but ...

Don't flame me but IMO the music and credits themselves were more entertaining than the series. I'm a history nut but it just seemed too affected and contrived (as did much of Michener's later works). Sorry.
Anyway, it's amazing to watch this and see how many formerly-famous, then-famous/now obscure , later famous, never-famous living and departed performers partipated in this. Almost as though they all picked the perfect time and venue to bridge the past+ present! Thanks for posting this.

  • I remember my ...

I remember my parents trying to get me to watch this mini-series on TV when I was little. I wasn't too interested in it at the time, but the theme song has stuck with me so much that I decided to buy the book a few months ago. I have to say that it is the best book I have ever read, and I can't wait for the DVD version of the mini-series to come out.

  • I watched it when ...

I watched it when it first aired - I was in my early teens.

Having read the book first (I live in Michener's home of Bucks County, PA), I looked forward to it every week! It's still my favorite Michener work.

Don't forget key characters such as Levi Zendt ("Potato" Brumbaugh's partner), Alexander McKeag (Pasquinel's partner), Maxwell Mercy, Charlotte Lloyd and Oliver Seccombe - and many others!

  • After thirty years ...

After thirty years I finally got to follow alot of the Oregon Trail and see some of the landmarks, such as,Chimney Rock, Scottsbluff, Register Cliff. As I traveled through NE & WY my mind would wander back to these wonderful characters that Michener brought to life and I would daydream about being there with Levi, Ellie and Pasquinal.
Hopefully, this magnificent mini-series will come out on Blu-Ray.
