The Mob hasn't owned Vegas for a quite some time. Even the skim from casinos owned by reputably acceptable owners is all but gone now.
Now- it's guys like Steve Wynn, and big major corporate firms that the mob can't even touch now.
But for many years throughout the late 70s, 80s, and into the 90s, the New York and Chicago Mobs skimmed from the legitimate owners that bought their casinos (under condition of managing the operations). Those were the top years in vegas for the Mob.

I don't know of any previous examples, I had just assumed that she invented the archetype.
