A few people asked for it so here it is. My own tutorial on how to mask in Sony Vegas Pro to give the illusion that there are several versions of yourself in one video.

Keep in mind that Sony Vegas Pro is the only software out of the 3 Sony Vegas software options that supports masking so if you are not using Pro you will not be able to do this.

I ran into some issues with my webcam & the video capture software messing up the videos. Basically what happened was my audio and video became unsynchronized a few minutes into each video so basically what I did for the live action video was I removed the sound and narrated the video. With the screenshot portion where I am working in sony vegas you will notice that the audio is not correctly synched up with the video. There is only a delay of a few seconds, however; so I didn't feel it was necessary to narrate that portion again.

I hope this video is helpful in your attempts to clone/mask in Sony Vegas Pro. Feel free to post your work as a video response as I would love to see what you all come up with. If you have any questions/comments you can leave them below or send me a message over youtube and I'll be happy to answer them.

Again, I hope this video is helpful to you. it is my first tutorial video so it's not really anything special. Next time I know not to use my web cam to capture video. If you have any other requests for tutorials just let me know and I'll throw something together that is of better quality than this tutorial.

Good luck! Thank you!

No problem! I'm glad you found my video helpful.

Yeah, sometimes it's the little things that are left out of tutorials that can be confusing. I tried to cover the main points. I'm glad you were able to fix your problem using my tutorial. :)

Sure, as soon as I get a green screen or something comparable to a green screen. That's one of the things on my "to do" list.

  • Unfortunately, no. ...

Unfortunately, no. Only sony vegas pro has the masking capability. Alternatively, you could probably use a green-screen method to create a similar illusion, but vegas pro is the only version that includes masking.

  • I don't have vegas ...

I don't have vegas in front of me right now so i can't go through to check it, but it may be under the help menu. There may be something under Help>>About Sony Vegas. Aside from that the only other way i could suggest is to check the pan/crop tool. If the masking option is there you have pro, if it is not then you have regular vegas.

  • Very carefully. The ...

Very carefully. The best way is probably to try to just make it look like they are touching. For example, masking it in such a way that one "clone's" arm is hidden behind the other's giving the illusion that one is touching the other's back. To do anything more intricate than that would require some VERY detailed masking. That's some advanced stuff there. You may also want to consider doing some green screening. That make it easier.

The "pro" version is the only version that supports masking, unfortunately. If you have anything less than Vegas 8 pro you will not have the ability to do masking. :-(
