This video shows you how to add space to an external had drive by replacing the actual drive that is inside the unit. The end result is that the old external hard drive will have more space and at a much lower cost than buying a new external hard drive.
I recommend NewEgg.com for buying an internal hard drive for this project.
This process can also be used to recover data from a hard drive that was in a computer that crashed.

  • Just need a USB ...

Just need a USB port and thats all for an external drive. This means a reduced risk of damaging the drive due to bad handling (like the guy on this video) or static.

And what if the PC doesn't have a SATA port? Or, what if the PC is already running?

He's got a completely valid point though. The title of the thread is wrong. It should be "how to add a larger drive to an enclosure".

    So I'm revoking your -1 and giving him a +1 :)

  • Ignore those people ...

Ignore those people. I'm really glad you and others with time to spare are creating instructional videos for the public to see. I've got a collection of MyBooks. One went dead. I've been searching YouTube for a helpful video like yours so I might recover my lost data. My warrantee expires in 2 days, but I don't need a new drive - I need my tax data (without spending big $ on recovery). I think I'll try ripping my drive apart. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Such a n00b comment. External is only a tiny bit slower than internal. And it is so much more convenient than internal as it can be moved around between PCs easily.
